San Diego County jostled by 4.5 pre-dawn quake in Riverside County

A magnitude 4.5 quake struck about 6 miles south-southeast of Mt. San Gorgonio on Tuesday morning, awakening residents across the Inland Empire without causing any major damage.

A 4.5-magnitude quake centered in Cabazon struck the Inland Empire at 4:49 a.m. Tuesday, May 8, according to the U.S. At least 27 aftershocks followed, the largest of which was a 3.2, the USGS said.

No injuries or damage were reported in the immediate aftermath of the quake, the Los Angeles Times said, but residents felt the shaking in L.A. More than 6,700 people had reported feeling the earth movements by 5:30 a.m. on the official USGS website.

Residents from across Southern California and the northernmost region of Mexico went online to report the quake, or to discuss it and crack jokes on social media.

Though scores of Southern Californians felt the predawn quakes, Jones assured residents that temblors of this size are fairly common statewide and are representative of normal California natural disaster activity.
