U.S. set for deeply controversial Jerusalem embassy move

The U.S. said it chose the date to coincide with the 70th anniversary of Israel's establishment.

At least 41 Palestinians were martyred and hundreds injured on Monday by Israeli gunfire during anti-occupation rallies in the Gaza Strip, according to the Health Ministry.

The United States was due to open its new embassy in Jerusalem - known as Al-Quds in Iran - later on Monday amid widespread Palestinian anger and praise from Israelis.

The Israeli military dropped leaflets and fired tear gas into Gaza early on Monday, warning Palestinians to stay away from the border as protesters gathered for the penultimate day of a six-week demonstration.

The 12, including a 14-year-old, were killed as major clashes broke out across the border between stone-throwing Palestinians seeking to damage the fence and Israeli snipers.

Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus, an Israeli military spokesman, said the army had bolstered its border forces and added security in and around neighboring communities to defend against a mass breach.

Critics have faulted Israeli forces for using live fire, while Israel says its actions are necessary for security as people threaten the border fence.

While Mr Netanyahu will see the embassy move as a great strategic victory, in the West Bank and Gaza the same event will be viewed as a large nail in hopes for a Palestinian state.

As part of the announcement, the President said the U.S Embassy will be relocated from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

The ceremony will take place in the U.S. Consulate's visa section in Jerusalem which will later become the embassy.

The Israeli government claims Jerusalem as its capital, but the Palestinian National Authority (PA) considers East Jerusalem to be Palestinian territory, illegally occupied by Israel since the 1967 Arab-Israeli War.

A lot of people try to call it that, but it wasn't deemed torture at the time. "If it were my call, I'd do it again". Haspel is to be commended for speaking her mind and allowing her own moral compass to direct her personal actions.

"I think it shows you that the President is absolutely doing the right thing here", Coates said of the embassy move.

The Ministry of Health in Gaza says that that the number of Palestinians killed by Israel on the Gaza border has risen to 52.

However, not many would agree with the move reflective of bringing peace to the region.

The protests are calling for Palestinian refugees who fled or were expelled during the 1948 war surrounding Israel's creation to be allowed to return to their homes now inside Israel.

"A great day for Israel", the U.S. president, who stoked Arab anger by recognising Jerusalem as Israel's capital in December, said in a tweet. "We are deeply grateful and our people will be eternally grateful for his bold decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and to move the embassy there", Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said yesterday.

The Palestinians, who want their own future state with its capital in East Jerusalem, have been outraged by Trump's shift from previous administrations' preference for keeping the US Embassy in Tel Aviv pending progress in peace efforts.

In an editorial, the Dubai-based Gulf News said: "This is a day when the United States and the administration of President Donald Trump should hang its head in shame".

The decision angered much of the Middle East, including USA allies, and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas responded by breaking off all contact with the Trump administration.

"They're very cheerful, happy and good people and I'm very proud of our partners in Guatemala", Barkat said.

His daughter Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner are representing the Trump administration.
