Florida man dies in e-cigarette explosion, police say

In an incredibly freakish twist, a 38-year-old Florida man has died due to what authorities are calling a "projectile wound of the head" which was caused by his vape device.

The vape pen exploded, causing a fire in his home and burning at least 45 percent of his body.

FEMA recently reported that there were nearly 200 incidents involving exploding vape pens between 2000 and 2016, but D'Elia is the first person in the U.S. to die as a effect.

According to the report, the pen he used was a "mod" type, or a modified e-cigarette created to be customizable. Officials are ruling the death an accident, but that's hardly comforting for D'Elia's friends and family.

The health effects related to the ingestion of e-cigarette vapor are still being studied by government agencies. It said the company had had problems with people cloning their devices and using bad batteries.

E-cigarette users are also recommended to buy their products from reliable sources and to follow the guidelines for use recommended by manufacturers.

Between January 2009 and December 2016, there were 95 reported incidents of explosions and fire involving an electronic cigarette, resulting in 133 injuries, 38 of which were severe, the U.S. Fire Administration said. In 2013, Jennifer Ries was awarded $1.9 million when she suffered second-degree burns from an e-cigarette explosion while Los Angeles Superior Court is now investigating 10 civil suits filed across the state by injured e-cigarette users.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also has a page dedicated to e-cigarette explosion dangers.

Additionally, upon usage, the pen exploded and lodged pieces into his skull, per autopsy reports, and burned more than 80% of his body after the accidental sparked blaze.

There have been other cases of exploding e-cigarettes, but none of them were fatal.

Replace batteries when they come in contact with water or if they become damaged.
