Student, teacher killed in New Jersey school bus, dump truck crash

The bus was filled with 40 or so fifth-and-sixth graders at the time of the 10:20AM crash on Route 80 near exit 25 in Mount Olive Township.

Video show this school bus, one of three driving to a class trip, missing the exit for its destination, Waterloo Village. "All other individuals injured in this crash have been transported to local hospitals for care". From 2014-2016 there were more than 5,000 crashes on Route 80 in Morris County, resulting in 10 deaths and almost 1,400 injuries, according to a News 4 I-Team analysis of state data.

"We would like to thank the Paramus Community for their support during this very hard time", the school district said on its website. The truck was registered to Mendez Trucking, of Belleville, and had "In God We Trust" emblazoned on the back of it. The dump truck seemed to be mostly intact.

The bus was owned by the school district and equipped with seat belts, according to Paramus schools superintendent Michele Robinson. "Morristown Medical Center, St. Joseph's Hospital, and Hackettstown Medical Center are treating the injured passengers".

At East Brook Middle School, where a sign reads "A Great Place to Grow Up", parents gathered outside to collect their children. Murphy said the driver of the truck was alive and at the hospital, but officials didn't reveal his condition.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 118 people on school buses were killed in crashes from 2007 to 2016, the a year ago for which data is available.
