Storm Alberto gains strength approaching northern Gulf Coast

Storm Alberto gains strength approaching northern Gulf Coast

Tropical Storm Warnings have been issued for that area.

The hurricane center said Sunday that a tropical storm warning was in effect from Bonita Beach, Fla., to the Mississippi-Alabama border.

By midday Sunday, the US Southeast was seeing 50-mile-per-hour (80-km-per-hour) winds and up to 10 inches of rain in some places. Heavy rain, flooding and possible tornadoes were also anticipated with the storm.

A separate storm system on Sunday caused flash flooding in the Baltimore suburb of Ellicott City, Maryland, turning its historic Main Street into a raging river with water reaching past the first floor of buildings and sweeping cars down the road, local news video showed.

Alberto is scheduled to make landfall on the Florida Panhandle early Monday, and the three states likely to bear the brunt of the storm have begun preparing states of emergency.

Alberto has been a subtropical storm since its formation because it lacked the warm core that forms the core of tropical storms.

Florida, Alabama and MS declared states of emergency on Saturday as the storm threatened up to 12 inches of rain over the Memorial Day weekend, as well as tidal surges and damaging winds, according to Patrick Burke of the weather service's Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland. He said Alberto's biggest threat will be its heavy rains, with forecasts of anywhere from four to 12 inches of rain in some areas.

MS governor Phil Bryant has declared a state of emergency as the storm moves toward the state's coast.

Ireland referendum could lift strict ban on abortion
Campaigning was not allowed on Friday, but Dublin was still filled with signs and banners urging citizens to vote "yes" or "no". However, Fortin says a lot of people just assume that that right is "now ensconced", and that access is easy for everyone.

Florida Governor Rick Scott, who issued a state of emergency on Saturday in all of the state's 67 counties, said on Sunday that the Florida National Guard has 5,500 guard members ready to be deployed if needed.

At 2 a.m. EDT Sunday, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said Alberto was about 380 miles (615 kilometers) south of Apalachicola, Florida, and moving north-northeast at 13 mph (20 kph).

Past year was an exceptionally busy hurricane season, with Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria devastating Puerto Rico, Houston, Texas, and the Florida Gulf Coast.

On Friday morning, the agency announced that an area of low pressure in the Caribbean had developed into Subtropical Storm Alberto with maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour.

The National Weather Service (NWS) said Sunday that tropical storm warnings cover the entire Florida Gulf Coast and inland portions of the Florida Panhandle as well as parts of coastal Alabama.

The downpours could dampen Memorial Day, the unofficial start of the summer tourist season along Gulf beaches. Because of expected deteriorating weather, the sandbag distribution points will not be open Sunday, the county said.

"Heavy rainfall and tropical storm conditions will likely reach the northern Gulf Coast well before the arrival of the center of Alberto", the National Hurricane Center said in its advisory. However, while we have less of a rain and storm threat the humidity and heat will continue to be high.

The center also has discontinued all storm surge warnings for most of the state's peninsula. Meteorologists are calling it a "subtropical storm", not to be confused with the just plain tropical storms we know and dread.
