Weekend Box Office: ‘Star Wars’ Fatigue Sets In As ‘Solo’ Disappoints

While we won't receive the full four-day estimate until tomorrow, it's safe to say that Solo: A Star Wars Story will not be gunning for the Memorial Day weekend box office record anymore - as predicted - which is now held by Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End ($140M).

20th Century Fox's Deadpool 2 sliced its way into second place domestically, falling 65% to a total of $43.3 million for the three day weekend and a four day estimated total of $54.5 million. It stands the greatest chance of besting Rogue One's opening weekend at $155 million.

Disney has proved they are not messing up a golden opportunity when they replaced directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller with Ron Howard after initial reactions to the project were bad. Solo was predicted to earn $148 million in global markets.

Proving all the industry insider remarks about Han Solo being a big mess correct, what should have been an easy "win" for Disney featuring one of the most popular Star Wars characters of all time, Han Solo is coming off as a major embarrassment and flop for Disney. "Deadpool 2" is expected to make $54 million over the four-day weekend, giving it an estimated domestic total after Monday of $218 million.

"We're going to judge "Solo" by where we finish rather than where we start", said Dave Hollis, Disney's president of theatrical distribution. Nevertheless, Disney has Episode IX on the calendar for December 20, 2019, and is mulling standalone movies about Boba Fett, Lando, and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The notes escalated into a formally worded notice for Rotondo to leave that set a 30-day deadline - which lapsed on March 15. Michael argued in court yesterday that legal precedent allowed him six months notice before his parents could kick him out.

"It's the compressed timeframe between the two "Star Wars" films and the highly competitive nature of this marketplace". In the days ahead of release, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said a Lando movie is a possibility. As fun as being a Star Wars fan is, there's a lot of stuff you have to put up with to fully enjoy the films.

"Until the Star Wars universe is firing on all cylinders like the Marvel universe, I think it would behoove them to ease their foot off the pedal in terms of spinoffs", says box-office analyst Jeff Bock, who is with Exhibitor Relations. Additionally, Disney hired the creators of Game of Thrones for a new Star Wars film series, while The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is making his own new trilogy of saga films after JJ Abrams' Episode IX next year.

A bigger cause for concern though for Disney is the growing sense of apathy and rejection of Star Wars properties in China.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at USA and Canadian theaters, according to comScore. Final domestic figures will be released Tuesday.
