Trump commutes sentence for Kardashian-backed drug offender

She met with President Trump and the president's son-in-law, senior adviser Jared Kushner.

"There's a lot of family that want to see her".

She said: 'I would like to thank President Trump for his time this afternoon. "It's a miracle day".

Johnson previously thanked Kardashian West for advocating for her, in a letter that was shared to the Selfish author's Instagram Stories last week. The reality star says it tugged at her heart and moved her to action. "I feel like my life is starting over again". Kardashian was also in attendance, but conservative zealot Candace Owens was the one who captured West's full attention.

The reality star took to Twitter to celebrate the news, writing, "BEST NEWS EVER!". Kim was the one to tell Alice that she was being released. Let us know in the comments.

According to data from the Bureau of Prisons released in January, more than 1,500 people in federal prisons are now serving life without parole for drug offenses.

"Ms Johnson has accepted responsibility for her past behaviour and has been a model prisoner over the past two decades", the statement reads. "Her commutation is inspirational & gives hope to so many others who are also deserving of a second chance", West tweeted.

Kim Kardashian arrived at the White House for a meeting with President Trump to discuss prison reform and Alice Marie Johnson.

Tretessa Johnson, Catina Johnson's sister, said she always thought she'd greet her mother the moment she walked out of prison. Adding, "he really understood, and I am very hopeful that this will turn out really positively".

Kardashian West last week lobbied the president in the Oval Office to intervene on behalf of the inmate who is serving a life sentence without parole for a non-violent drug offence. In the footage, Johnson reflects on the her mistakes and the devastating effect of prison. "I'm planning a dinner for him at our house", she told E! Johnson said her role was that of a go-between, relaying messages but not personally making drug deals or selling drugs.

"At 63 years old I am closer to heaven than to earth", Johnson wrote the judge in her case last year. Trump is now considering almost a dozen appeals for clemency on top of the five formal pardons he has issued so far, White House officials tell ABC News.

Johnson's commutation is the sixth time Trump has granted clemency to someone since taking office previous year.

Johnson petitioned former President Barack Obama for clemency three times but was denied under his relief program.

US Attorney Michael Dunavant issued a statement late Wednesday: "Included in our Constitution is the absolute power and authority of the President to grant Executive Clemency relief, and I understand and respect the President's decision to grant a commutation of Ms. Johnson's sentence".
