India lauded for plan to beat plastic pollution

On occasion of World Environment Day, Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (Sepa) organised a round table conference in collaboration with the National Forum for Environment and Health (NFEH) and other stakeholders with the theme "Beat Plastic Pollution".

For years, environmentalists have warned of the deadly effect plastic trash has on marine wildlife.

Greenpeace warns that commitments on making plastic packaging recyclable and compostable will do little to turn the tide on plastic pollution, and that companies and government need to focus on reductions and eliminations of single-use plastics production if they are serious about tackling this issue.

Bollywood celebrities like Madhuri Dixit-Nene, Dia Mirza and Jackie Shroff have urged people to save planet Earth on World Environment Day on Tuesday. In total, 50 per cent of the plastic is of single use.

Disposable plasticDespite the many valuable uses of plastic, people everywhere have become over reliant on single-use or disposable plastic - with severe environmental consequences. "If present trends continue, by 2050 our oceans will have more plastic than fish", he said.

Most of this plastic garbage clogging waterways and landfill is single-use items like straws, bags and cutlery.

"Our world is swamped by harmful plastic waste", U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a speech.

India has set an example on the world stage by committing to beat plastic pollution and showcased best practices and innovations to overcome the challenge, a senior United Nations official has said.

He expressed need for celebrating each day of the year as a World Environment Day.

Just nine percent of the nine billion tonnes of plastic the world has ever produced has been recycled.

Each year, World Environment Day has a theme which major corporations, non-governmental organisations, communities, governments and celebrities worldwide adopt to promote environmental awareness.

According to a statement by spokesman of the corporation, the GMD said NNPC was inclined towards continual improvement of its waste management practice in line with the policy which he recently signed.

"Within this period however, plastic has transformed everything from clothing, cooking, and catering to product design, engineering and retailing", due to its advantage of lasting for a long time, almost all the plastic ever produced, still exist in one form or the other today.
