Hands on with Redmi Y2: Xiaomi's selfie-focused budget smartphone

Xiaomi has launched the Redmi Y2 smartphone in India. Redmi Y2 will go on sale on 12 June at Mi.com, Amazon.in and Mi Home stores across the country.

The artificial intelligence-powered OS was unveiled in China last week, and comes with advanced photography algorithms and features such as full screen display gestures, and AI Preload, which speeds up the device. It is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC (up to 2GHz), paired with an Adreno 506 GPU and 3GB/ 4GB of RAM.

The cameras include a 12 MP + 5 MP dual camera on the rear and a 16 MP front camera.

The Xiaomi Redmi Y2 runs on Android 8.1 Oreo with the company's custom MIUI 9.5 skinned on top. Xiaomi MIUI 10 software will also be revealed, and the company will likely announce a list and timeline for the rollout of the new MIUI operating system.

Talking about Redmi 6 Pro, the phone is rumored to sport a 5.84-inch FHD+ display with 18:9 aspect ratio. a dual-rear camera setup and 4,000mAh battery.

The latest Redmi S2 has definitely taken some design cues from company's famous, Redmi Note 5 Pro. The hardware is familiar, but the addition of face unlock and a retooled front camera make it a strong contender in this category. The Redmi Y2 comes in Gold, Rose Gold, and Dark Grey color options.

The Moto Z3 Play also gets support for things like Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac dual-band, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS USB Type-C port, and 4G VoLTE support and with a battery capacity of 3000mAh, plus 15W TurboPower fast charging, you will be able to experience plenty of talk time and charge your device faster. The Redmi Y2 will be endorsed by well-known actress Katrina Kaif in India.

As expected, the Xiaomi Redmi Y2 launch was accompanied by the debut of the MIUI 10 Global ROM. On the front, the device sports a 16MP selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture, AI portrait mode, AI beauty mode and an LED flash.

The phone is priced at Rs. 9,999 ($133) for the 3GB RAM variant and Rs. 12,999 ($192) for the 4GB RAM one.

The Zenfone Max Pro M1 is currently the best value for money smartphone available in India right now, and of course, when you get a value for money product, you've to struggle for getting your hands on it. However, the other specification of the phone wasn't revealed but there are chances that Xiaomi's upcoming smartphone will follow that tradition and feature specifications similar to the Mi 6X.

The Redmi Y2 packs in 3080mAh battery which should be good enough for an entire day, even for power users, especially because the Snapdragon 625 is a pretty efficient chipset.
