Angela Merkel calls USA retraction of support 'sobering and somewhat depressing'

In the same interview, Merkel said the European Union was preparing to implement counter-measures against USA tariffs on imported steel and aluminum.

She said Trump's move underlined the need for greater cooperation within the European Union.

The EU has vowed to retaliate against US metal tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump, and tensions worsened at a Group of Seven summit in Canada after Trump rejected an attempt to write a consensus statement and bitterly insulted the Canadian host.

Trump was attending the G7 Summit in Canada, but left the meeting early announcing via a tweet "that he was backing out of the joint communique". But it won't solve the differences, particularly on trade, with the European Union moving toward retaliatory tariffs from July on key US goods.

Trump was especially "strong" towards Trudeau, ranting about agriculture, and Merkel.

Trump's "America First" message to allies has hardened since he brought hardline national security adviser John Bolton on to his team.

"As Canadians, we are polite, we're reasonable, but also we will not be pushed around", Trudeau said.

The bid to gloss over the divide might see the reputation of the G-7 salvaged instead of becoming an unprecedented casualty of us tariffs, disagreements over climate change and the future of the Iran deal.

Trump revoked his administration's support for the G7 communique after Trudeau's news conference.

According to Merkel, the return of Russian Federation in the G8 format is possible with visible progress in the implementation of the Minsk agreements.

As befits his role as annual chairman of the G-7, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's picture is taken from the side, impartially showing Mr Trump dealing with his counterparts as equals.

"Actually, we were just talking, the whole group, about something unrelated to everything, very friendly".

Trump appeared to acquiesce to Merkel and other leaders' positions, as the G-7 issued a joint statement to uphold "free, fair, and mutually beneficial trade" at the end of the two-day summit.

Germany's Angela Merkel called for a spirit of "compromise" on reforming the euro zone at a meeting on Thursday (19 April) with French President Emmanuel Macron, who pressed for "solidarity" among members of the currency union. "International cooperation cannot depend on anger or small words".

This was Thiem's moment to finally break through to the next level - a Grand Slam final on a surface he plays his best on. With his strong clay court play as of late, Nadal is not necessarily walking into this match the clearcut favorite.
