F1: Lewis Hamilton wins in France, retakes driver's championship lead

Lewis Hamilton reclaimed the lead in the Formula One world championship with a comfortable victory Sunday in the French Grand Prix's return to the calendar.

"Of course I am happy but I left three-tenths on the table", Hamilton told Sky Sports F1.

"That said, I have scored points in every single race I have finished, and hopefully tomorrow will be one of those Sundays". "I got a puncture and decent damage to the floor, which really compromised the race".

Vettel was 11th by lap 10, eighth by lap 15, and fifth by lap 20, at the back of the lead group.

Hamilton dominated the race, qualifying and Friday's practice sessions boosted by an engine upgrade that Mercedes had expected to roll out in Canada, when Hamilton finished fifth and lost his lead to race victor Vettel.

Brendon Hartley will start the race from last place after Toro Rosso had to change his Honda engine on Friday.

Vettel limped back to the pits to get a new nose piece while Bottas got a new tire for the one that was shredded by the nudge from the four-time former champion.

The FIA looked at the incident and ruled Vettel was guilty of causing the crash, handing the German a five-second penalty that he served at his second pitstop.

Pelinka, team president Magic Johnson, and head coach Luke Walton, all of whom assumed their current roles with the franchise within the past two years, have a vision for the franchise.

"We were going kind of side by side to the braking zone and I went for the outside", said the Finn.

Hamilton's main challenger for the fastest time at the Paul Ricard Circuit was teammate Valtteri Bottas, who was the second quickest ahead of points leader Sebastian Vettel in his Ferrari. Apart from the colourful lines it is hard to tell where the hell you are most of the time which is the part that I dislike. The Dutchman endured a tough start to 2018 and faced heavy criticism following a run of high-profile incidents, although his recent form suggests he has turned a corner.

Asked if there was anything he felt he would do differently if he could relive the moment, Vettel replied: "With hindsight, I would have liked to have a worse start, because then it would have been more straightforward, I wouldn't be in that position".

Pivotal to the turnaround in performance was the introduction of Mercedes' 2.1 spec engine, with the Silver Arrows simply too powerful for their rivals after around-the-clock work at their Brixworth factory.

"We definitely pulled together and have done a better job so far this weekend", he said.

"We're all on the edge, we're fighting for the world championships, we're not pootling around, we're out there putting our lives on the line", said Hamilton.

A decade later, France is back, but this time at the Circuit Paul Ricard in Le Castellet.
