Senegal v Colombia 28 June 2018

There was a blow for Colombia on 31 minutes as Jose Pekerman was forced to withdraw James Rodriguez for Lucas Muriel due to an injury.

Colombia secured a spot in the knockout stages of the 2018 FIFA World Cup with a 1-0 win over Senegal on Thursday.

Colombia will face the runners-up of Group G, either England or Belgium, who face off later on Thursday and whose ranking will also be decided via fair play should they draw.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com also reported that Japan lost 1-0 against Poland in the other game. It means there is no African country in the knockout rounds of the World Cup for the first time in 36 years.

Today Badou and Idrissa Gueye need to be far more diligent in their shielding and harrying work and Mane has to make better runs beyond the centre-forward, particularly if they go for a 4-3-3.

Suarez scores again, Uruguay beats host Russia 3-0
Edinson Cavani later added a third goal for his country with a poacher's finish from Diego Godin's header at a corner. Uruguay went up 2-0 over Russian Federation on an own-goal - the sixth of the World Cup to tie the tournament record.

The two teams appeared well matched in the opening salvos but Colombia failed to create anything of note in the first half following Juan Quintero's free kick that was pushed around the post by Khadim N'Diaye. However, after consultation with the video assistant referee (VAR), Colombian defender Davinson Sanchez was deemed to have touched the ball and the decision was reversed.

Senegal had been heading through until the 74th minute when Mina rose to meet a corner and sent a bullet header into the net. Yerry Mina scored the only goal in the match. Given they need only a point, they may revert to the 4-4-2 they used against Poland but against Colombia's attack and with their own flaky defence in mind, one would think they would have to score.

Colombia will play the runner-up of that group a day later.

Upon learning of the goal in Volgograd, Colombia adopted a more defensive approach and were content to try to pinch a goal from a set piece, with Radamel Falcao squandering a decent chance on 66 minutes when he headed wide after running across his marker.
