Woman Killed, Another Loses Legs in Tour Boat Explosion

Stephanie Schaffer, a 22-year-old student at Castleton University, was among nine people injured when the boat exploded Saturday, killing a US citizen.

There were 12 passengers on the boat, including two from the Bahamas. Stephanie Schaffer had both her lower legs amputated after suffering serious injuries in a deadly Bahamas tour boat explosion. She is now in a medically induced coma and is not yet aware her life will never be the same.

A GoFundMe page for the Schaffer family has raised more than $90,000.

Video shows the small, white boat completely ablaze, with plumes of black smoke emanating from it.

Just after 9 a.m., ten American tourists and two Bahamians were on a boat off Barraterre, Exuma Island when an explosion occurred causing the boat to catch fire., the Royal Bahamas police force said. They are being treated at hospitals in Pinellas County.

Stefanie's mother, Stacey Schaffer suffered multiple broken bones and internal injuries.

Schaffer was with her younger sister, mother and stepfather when disaster struck.

The company that ran the trip, 4C's Adventures, declined to comment on the explosion to DailyMail.com because they are under investigation.

Shanta Knowles, superintendent of police for the Royal Bahamas Police Force, told NBC investigators were still "trying to determine what went wrong".

One American woman was killed and seven other people were injured. Passengers on the nearby boat can be heard screaming while others are seen wading towards the flaming ship with flotation devices. "We are saddened and our hearts are hurting, but we will get through this together", Chester Cooper, a member of parliament for Exumas and Ragged Island said in a Facebook post.

The U.S. Coast Guard's Clearwater crew transported four people back to Florida.

Schaffer's brother, George, posted on Facebook about the incident.
