Missing 13 found safe in Thai cave but rescue 'not over'

"We are the first".

Now that the missing Thai football team has been found, the next step is determining how to get the boys and coach safely out of the partly flooded cave in northern Thailand. The boys were found late Monday night during a desperate search that drew worldwide help and captivated the nation.

A video shot by rescuers on Monday in flickering torchlight revealed boys clad in shorts and red and blue shirts sitting or standing on the rock above an expanse of water.

"How many of you?" he asked.

"We surveyed all areas and there were reported to be about 20, and out of that there are about 10 with the possibility of having shafts", Gov. Narongsak said. "Monday. You have been here - 10 days".

Until then, the divers have already provided the boys and coach with PowerGel, electrolyte-laced liquids, and pain killers and antibiotics if needed to sustain their health.

Now, the hard task of getting the group to safety begins.

In addition to the divers, teams have been working to pump out water as well as divert groundwater.

"We're here to support the Thai government in its operation", said Cameron Noble from Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

It remains unclear whether any of the group are injured or in need of medical attention, but they have been given energy gels to sustain them while a plan is worked out to bring them to safety. "You have to dive".

Huerter could turn into a good 3-point threat, but I feel he lacks the intangibles to become much more than that. The only other sure bet is that the majority of the players taken in the first round will be one-and-done guys.

(Tham Luang Rescue Operation Center via AP) Rescuers make their way up at the entrance to a cave complex where 12 boys and their soccer coach went missing, in Mae Sai, Chiang Rai province, in northern Thailand, Monday, July 2, 2018.

He said supplying them on site "may face challenges depending on how hard the dives are". Rain continued to fall in Chiang Rai on Tuesday and was forecast to intensify from Wednesday.

They still have to be extracted from the caves, and are reportedly "too week to move".

It's been revealed that two British divers, John Volanthen and Rick Stanton, were the first to reach the trapped team.

Thai navy SEAL divers have been crucial to the search, but have been stymied by muddy water reaching the cave's ceiling, forcing them to suspend operations again and again.

"This is today's aim is to widen this hole", Chiang Rai governor Narongsak Osatanakorn told reporters on Monday.

Anmar Mirza, the U.S. National Cave Rescue Commission coordinator, says the primary decision is now one of whether to try to evacuate them or to supply them in place.

The boys can be seen perching on a slope inside the cave, dressed in shorts and t-shirts. Rescuers shook hands and congratulated each other as occasional cheers broke out.

The condition of the group was not immediately clear after days underground. The cave floods during Thailand's rainy season and even elite Thai navy SEAL divers were finding it hard to move through the muddy waters, currents and tight passageways. Cave diving experts flew in from the United Kingdom, and 17 USA air force rescue and survival specialists travelled from Japan to join the 132 Thai army, navy and police officers working day and night to try to find the group.

The effort to locate 12 boys and their soccer coach missing in a cave in Thailand for a week picked up pace Saturday, as a break in the rain eased flooding in the system of caverns and more experts from around the world joined the rescue mission.
