Discoveries boost Jupiter’s retinue to 79 moons - including a wrong-way oddball

Of the 12 newly discovered moons, nine orbit the outer ring and move in retrograde, or the opposite direction from Jupiter's rotation.

Dr Sheppard and colleagues first spotted the moons in spring previous year while they were looking for very distant Solar System objects as part of the search for the suspected planet on the fringes. With the new set of discovery, Jupiter now has 79 moons, which is the most for any planet found until now.

"We're looking for new possible planets and dwarf planets in our solar system, just seeing what is out there", Sheppard said. Kenneth Chang at The New York Times reports that Jupiter was scheduled to pass through their search area, so astronomer Scott S. Sheppard of the Carenegie Institution for Science and his team thought the gas giant was worth a quick look, training the Magellan Telescope at the Las Campanas Observatory in Chile on the area. Two of the discoveries are part of an inner group in the prograde that orbit in the same direction as the planet's rotation.

Scientists proposed naming it Valetudo, after Roman god Jupiter's great-granddaughter, the goddess of health and hygiene. Such a collision would quickly break apart and grind the object down to dust, Sheppard said. Unfortunately, they couldn't find the hypothesized planet using the Blanco 4-meter telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter-American in Chile, but they did manage to unearth a treasure trove of new satellites around our largest planet.

Due to their sizes - one to three kilometers - these moons are more influenced by surrounding gas and dust. Ganymede, Jupiter's largest moon and the biggest in the solar system, has a diameter of about 5,300 kilometers (about 3,300 miles). The astronomers are now running computer simulations to determine how the ancient moons fragmented. Sheppard says more searching should turn up more moons - maybe a hundred or more of the really small ones. Valetudo is the goddess of health and hygiene, which can not help with this little oddball moon's self-confidence. The circumstances of the moons' orbits lend further support to the view that they were formed long after Saturn and its larger moons coalesced from a primordial cloud of gas and dust. The confirmation of 10 was announced Tuesday.

The discovery of this collection of moons was actually made by accident as the team had been observing further into space in the hope of finding 'Planet Nine', the so-far theoretical planet that could exist at the farthest-flung part of our solar system.

It took the team a while to make the required observations to confirm each moon's existence. The orbits of 9 other small Jovian moons are yet unknown. The newly discovered retrograde moons take about two years to orbit Jupiter.

Because the new moons are a few kilometers in size, the team thinks that the impacts that created the satellites likely took place after the era of planet formation ended. The first four moons were discovered by Galileo in 1610.

It happened during the search ninth planet of the Solar system.
