Tour de France re-starts after farmers' protest

Tom Dumoulin crossed second, two seconds behind Thomas, and Romain Bardet came third, three seconds back.

Each of these riders are recognised as five-time Tour champions... and that's a claim that Froome started the 2018 Tour striving to equal.

"It was a very annoying climb of Alpe d'Huez". I'm sad for Yates who crashed but it could have happened to me. "I went when I wanted to and that's about it". "It's not an easy stage", said Froome.

Sprinters Fernando Gaviria of Colombia and Dylan Groenewegen of the Netherlands, winners of two stages each, abandoned the race during Thursday's stage ending atop the iconic Alpe d'Huez, exhausted after an opening block of racing in extreme heat.

He added: "I'm not sure they would like to have seen their (France) football players being spat at (the World Cup) in Russian Federation".

Stuyven appeared to be on his way to taking the stage win after making the first break for the line, but he was reeled in by Fraile and Alaphilippe, the former showing his class to cross the line first.

His most hard moment on a bike came during his professional debut in 2016 at the Tour of the Mediterranean in France.

Wednesday's stage to the summit of the Col du Portet is the wildcard, just 65km long and starting with an experimental grid created to promote explosive racing. "It was my first professional race and it was bad. But I never lost confidence".

The Kenyan-born Briton had double the permitted amount of the drug in his sample when he won the race past year.

Tour de France 2018 Stage 16

The last time a Tour stage was blocked by a demonstration was in 2004.

With 99 seconds in hand, this is Thomas' Tour to lose. But he rebounded by winning the Tour of California ahead of Tejay Van Garderen in May.

Asked if he would sacrifice his hopes of a fifth Tour crown to help Thomas, Froome replied: "Yes". The confit of duck is a classic and consists of duck legs seasoned a day in advance, then cooked in fat and wine. In the mountains, however, he's finishing stages among the top riders despite having spent his energy reserves helping his teammates.

He now sits 22nd overall after 15 stages. "The Spanish, fantastic. It just seems to be a French thing". "I'm sure there would have been a word or two about that, but it's okay to spit at us and our staff?"

Sagan left it late to strike but the Bora-Hansgrohe rider defeated Alexander Kristoff, of Norway and UAE Team Emirates, and Arnaud Demare of France and Groupama-FDJ in a bunch finish.

"We have followed him and have seen what he is capable of", Movistar sports director Jose Luis Arrieta told The AP.

He won in a remarkable manner but it was a victory that has been lambasted by many cycling followers - doubt about good performances is common in a sport with cycling's dubious history.

Bernal, however, is keeping his feet, if not on the round, then at least firmly on the pedals.

"So close to the (finish), it's all about, 'Do I go for it or not?' Maybe if they put it earlier in the race it could have been a bigger battle", Steels says.
