Redding Police Arrest Would-Be Thieves, Looters Prowling Evacuation Zone

Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko said he expected to find several of those people alive and just out of touch with loved ones. The victim's identity was not released.

Two people were arrested on suspicion of looting evacuated homes Sunday in Redding after police say they tried to burglarize a home in the evacuation zone where a homeowner had stayed behind. Hundreds of homes were destroyed and about 50,000 people were under evacuation orders.

The Carr Fire is now the size of 80,906 acres.

High temperatures, low humidity and increased winds are all in the forecast, setting the stage for more explosive fire behavior, Chris Harvey with the Cal Fire Incident Management Team said Sunday.

Residents who gathered their belongings in haste described a chaotic and congested getaway as the embers blew up to a mile ahead of flames and the fire leaped across the wide Sacramento River and torched subdivisions in Redding, a city of 92,000 about 100 miles south of the OR border.

The blaze has also destroyed 517 structures and damaged 135 more. A count by The Associated Press found at least 300 of those structures were homes.

A house burns during the Carr fire in Redding, California on July 27, 2018. The fire had not grown inside the city limits since Saturday, Gouvea said.

"There are just places were there should not be subdivisions", said Kurt Henke, a former fire chief in Sacramento who now serves as a consultant to fire organizations.

The Ranch and River fires in Mendocino County have collectively scorched more than 24,000 acres, Cal Fire said. But then he composed himself.

The nearby town of Keswick, with a population of about 450, was reduced to ash. The San Bernardino County Fire Department was called in to tamp down smoking piles of debris that were scattered around the town amid downed electricity lines. It said the elderly couple had been caring for the great-grandchildren for years in their rental home. The flames laid waste to about 25 blocks, and the "mop up" work was likely to take days. He said his crew would be looking for anything salvageable, but there was little left standing.

Liz Williams loaded up two kids in her vehicle and then found herself locked in bumper-to-bumper traffic with neighbors trying to flee from Lake Redding Estates.

Bledsoe's husband, Ed, wasn't home when the fire struck, according to an online fundraiser created by another family member. Government officials claimed that it is the largest fire in California, which is threatening more than 5,000 structures. The flames were just 5 percent contained.

"We did everything right", Laura Rathe said.

The bulldozer operator was identified by the Shasta County Sheriff's Department as Don Ray Smith of Pollock Pines.

Almost 3,400 firefighters are battling the blaze from the ground and in the air, as officials have deployed 17 helicopters, 334 fire engines, 68 bulldozers, and 65 water tenders.

Details of one firefighter, Brian Hughes, who died while trying to stop flames spreading to the south near Yosemite National Park, also emerged on Sunday. At least two flaming tornados toppled trees, shook firefighting equipment and busted truck windows, taking "down everything in its path", said Scott McLean, a spokesman for Cal Fire, the state agency responsible for fighting wildfires. With so many burning near populated areas, "resources are obviously stretched thin", he said.

The blaze, which was 5 percent contained today, was mostly burning north into remote and inaccessible areas.

More than 38,000 people remained under evacuation orders on Sunday in and around the city of Redding, about 160 miles (257 km) north of the state capital Sacramento, from a blaze that has destroyed more than 500 buildings and continued to rage largely unchecked into a seventh day.

Like the fires in Santa Rosa and Ventura past year, wind was a major contributor to the blaze's spread.
