West Nile fever confirmed in Kozhikode

In the state Department of Health's latest weekly update, it was noted that human cases of the West Nile virus have shown up in Brown (2), Buffalo, Day, Edmunds, Hanson, Hughes, Lincoln, Minnehaha and Spink counties.

The city of Sugar Land has confirmed the presence of West Nile virus at a mosquito trap located in the 6000 block of Walkers Park South in the New Territory subdivision.

Those zip codes are 40212, 40213, and 40214.

Experts say most people who are infected have no symptoms or experience only mild, flu-like symptoms.

Two suspected cases of West Nile Virus (WNV) infection were reported from the limits of Kozhikode corporation.

The virus can cause a variety of symptoms in humans, including headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea and rash, although most infected people (about 80 percent) do not develop any symptoms, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.

The post stated that 13 mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile Virus in Warren County so far in 2018.

"We urge those who are recreating outdoors to take common sense steps to prevent bug bites, including the use of mosquito repellents, along with wearing long trousers and long-sleeved shirts". Seventeen people died due to the Nipah virus in Kerala, out of which 16 cases were confirmed in lab.
