With White House stung by Cohen accusation, Trump fires back

He tweeted: "If anyone is looking for a good lawyer, I would strongly suggest that you don't retain the services of Michael Cohen!".

Trump then moved on to his longtime personal lawyer and "fixer" Michael Cohen, who pleaded guilty on Tuesday to similar tax evasion and bank fraud charges as Manafort, as well as two campaign finance charges that directly implicate Trump himself.

In pleading guilty on Tuesday, Cohen stated that he made hush payments in 2016 to women who claimed to have had affairs with the Republican presidential nominee, and did so at the "direction of the candidate", plainly meaning Trump. Today he stood up and testified under oath that Donald Trump directed him to commit a crime by making payments to two women for the principal goal of influencing an election.

Cohen's lawyer, Lanny Davis, said this morning that Cohen has information "that would be of interest" to the special counsel.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said impeaching Mr. Trump is "not a priority" for Democrats, telling the Associated Press after the Cohen and Manafort court decisions that "impeachment has to spring from something else".

Earlier in the morning, Trump broke his silence on the guilty plea by Cohen, writing his a wisecracking tweet that he would not recommend hiring him as a lawyer.

"There is most certainly enough evidence now" for Congress to open a probe, Cohen's lawyer, Lanny Davis, said in response to a question in a Bloomberg TV interview on Wednesday about whether Congress should pursue impeachment proceedings.

Cohen also said he worked with a "popular national tabloid" to identify negative stories about Trump's alleged extramarital affairs and quash them, according to court documents.

Cohen is set to be sentenced December 12.

For weeks now, Trump and Giuliani have sought to distance the president from Cohen - despite a well-documented, years-long relationship.

Was Tuesday the worst day ever of President Donald Trump's time in office?

One of those pardons Davis brought up specifically in Wednesday's interview: the one issued to former Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio, a staunch Trump supporter.

Davis said Cohen also had information that would be of interest to Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating the 2016 campaign, and that a website had been set up to collect donations for Cohen's legal expenses.

Trump has acknowledged that he paid Cohen between $100,000 and $250,000 past year. Did they come out of the campaign?

President Donald Trump speaks to the news media on the tarmac about the federal conviction of his former presidential campaign chairman Paul Manafort as the president arrives for a campaign event in Charleston, West Virginia, U.S. August 21, 2018.

While many of us are clinging to the hope that this will actually reap consequences upon our seemingly impenetrable president, for Daniels, Cohen's guilty plea has an extra dose of schadenfreude. These two men are now convicted financial fraudsters, each found guilty of precisely eight counts of various financial crimes, though nobody, glancing at their record, would imagine this is an exhaustive list.

Manafort, Trump wrote, had "tremendous pressure on him and, unlike Michael Cohen, he refused to 'break'".

Trump soon weighed in on Twitter, taking his shot at Cohen and praising Manafort, saying he has "such respect for a fearless man!"

Trump has repeatedly denied having any knowledge of the payments at the time, while accepting they were made using his funds - to which Cohen had access.

Trump said Tuesday the legal developments had nothing to do with Russian election interference and that he felt "badly for both" men.
