McCain's daughter Meghan will give a tribute and daughter Sidney will give a reading.

Congressional leaders are expected to deliver remarks at the memorial, as well as Vice-President Mike Pence.

Shortly before 11 a.m., McCain's body entered the Capitol Rotunda.

Pence said that President Donald Trump - a man who was not invited to services for McCain - asked him to be there.

A two-term congressman and a senator for more than three decades, McCain shaped USA policy on everything from immigration to foreign policy, spoke out against the country's use of enhanced interrogation practices during the George W. Bush administration and irrevocably changed the very body in which he served.

The last person to lie in state in the U.S. Capitol was Hawaii Democratic Sen.

McCain, who once jokingly called the press "my base", provided enormous access and was the most frequent Sunday show guest ever. All five living former US presidents issued statements praising McCain. "I lived and died a proud American", McCain wrote .

The procession was expected to continue highlighting issues that McCain found important, some of which contrasted with Trump's style and priorities.

Addressing an estimated 3,500 mourners, former Vice President Joe Biden recalled "the sheer joy that crossed his face when he knew he was about to take the stage of the Senate floor and start a fight". But Biden, who is considering challenging Trump in 2020, made what some saw as a veiled reference to the president. "You could come to a different conclusion, but he would part company with you if you lacked the basic values of decency, respect, knowing that this project is bigger than yourself", Biden said.

Biden advised McCain's friends and family to remember snapshots of him, such as a glance or a touch.

"What stands out about John McCain is what he stood for", Ryan said. "God, he loved it".

Trump and his wife, Melania, danced to the same song at the new president's inauguration in 2017.
