US Open:Serena Williams destroys Kaia Kanepi to reach the 10th quarterfinal

Serena Williams survived a severe test of her credentials against the hard-hitting Kaia Kanepi on Sunday as she advanced to the quarter-finals of the US Open with a 6-0 4-6 6-3 win.

Williams and Pliskova are 1-1 in head-to-head matches, but Pliskova defeated Williams in the semifinals here in 2016.

"It wasn't an easy match at all", she said.

Every interview she had conducted through the first week of the U.S. Open fortnight, from court-side chats, to post-match news conferences, now come with the obligatory mother/daughter story-line.

After Kanepi broke early to go up 2-0 in the second, a rare double-fault by Williams handed the Estonian a break and a 5-2 lead. She dropped her first set of the tournament Sunday, two days after routing sister Venus 6-1, 6-2 in the third round.

Stephens had quite a point, one that showed off the best of her versatile game, and so a reporter began recounting what happened to the defending U.S. Open champion after she won Sunday night to get back to the quarterfinals.

In Williams's previous match against her sister, the 36-year-old displayed a kind of mental toughness tennis fans hadn't yet seen since Williams returned to the tour after giving birth - the U.S. Open is just her seventh event back.

But she responded impressively to win 6-0 4-6 6-3 and set up a last-eight clash with eighth seed Karolina Pliskova, the last player to beat her at Flushing Meadows in the semi-finals two years ago.

She withdrew from the French Open before her last-16 match with Maria Sharapova because of injury, while she was beaten by Germany's Angelique Kerber in the Wimbledon final in July.

Recalling her 2017 quarterfinal victory over Sevastova, which was decided by a third-set tiebreaker, Stephens said- "I had to dig really deep". "I worked really hard on that". "I heard that's an very bad thing to do".

'Life hits you and you think, "What about me?"

Williams has been watching Pliskova since they last played and noted her impressive forehand and unsafe serve as her greatest weapons.

With Halep, number two seed Caroline Wozniacki and Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber having already fallen, few major obstacles stand between Williams and a seventh title in NY.

John Isner, of the United States, celebrates after defeating Milos Raonic, of Canada, during the fourth round of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, in NY on September 2, 2018. I'm thinking about playing tennis and enjoying this time with Olympia. "I'm going to continue to grind and see what happens". I haven't been single for a long time.

Defending champion Sloane Stephens eased into the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Elise Mertens.
