United States sanctions allies of Syria's Assad amid fears over Idlib attack

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani will host his Russian and Turkish counterparts Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan this afternoon. "The Turks have shown a great deal of resistance to an attack", he said.

Iranian and Russian support for Syrian President Bashar Assad has shored up the Damascus regime, allowing it to regain the upper hand in the seven-year civil war which has claimed some 350,000 lives since 2011.

The area in northwest Syria is home to some 3 million people - the majority of whom were displaced from other regions - as well as an array of Sunni rebels dominated by Islamist militants linked to al-Qaeda. "President Donald J. Trump has warned that such an attack would be a reckless escalation of an already tragic conflict and would risk the lives of hundreds of thousands of people".

For Russia and Iran, both allies of the Syrian government, retaking Idlib is crucial to complete what they see as a military victory in Syria's civil war after Syrian troops recaptured almost all other major towns and cities, largely defeating the rebellion against Assad.

"Al-Qatirji and his company have been found to be working with ISIS militants and also maintain a strong working relationship with multiple officials within the Government of Syria", according to the announcement. The country's state-run IRNA news agency described the summit as potentially offering an "agreement on peace and security" in Syria.

Naji Al-Mustafa, a spokesman for the Turkey-backed National Front for Liberation, said Friday his fighters were prepared for a battle that they expect will spark a major humanitarian crisis.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory said at least nine civilians, including five children from the same family, were killed in Russian raids Tuesday, while 10 more people were wounded.

The Reds will next be in action when they visit the capital to play the Lilywhites on September 15. We didn't drop our heads and we knew we could withstand the pressure and that is the main thing.

"You still need moderate opposition groups who represent the Sunni suffering masses in Syria to achieve a viable political solution and durable peace in this country", he wrote.

Russian Federation wants Turkey, which borders the province, to use its influence to rein in the dominant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, led by the former al-Qaeda branch in Syria, as well as rival rebels.

The Trump administration is walking back the notion of an imminent pullout of USA forces from Syria, promising to remain until there is an "enduring defeat" of ISIS. They said a military strike on Idlib would lead to a "humanitarian catastrophe".

Trump will chair a UN Security Council meeting on Iran during an annual gathering of world leaders in NY later this month.

De Mistura said there were about 10,000 fighters with UN-recognized terrorist organizations now in Idlib.

In regaining control over other parts of Syria in the a year ago, Russian-brokered surrender deals offered safe passage for tens of thousands of rebels and their families to Idlib, which is why the province became the last bastion of the armed resistance.

The Syrian military has been urging the rebels in Idlib to surrender.
