Florence strengthens 'rapidly,' now powerful Category 4 hurricane

A hurricane hunter plane found Florence strengthening quickly, reaching top winds of 85 miles per hour (140 kph) Sunday evening after crossing the 74 miles per hour threshold from tropical storm to a hurricane earlier in the day.

Hurricane and Storm Surge Watches will be issued on Tuesday as the storm is expected to head toward the southeastern USA, potentially making landfall, still as a category 4 hurricane, Thursday afternoon or night.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 10 miles from the center and tropical-storm force winds extend outward up to 45 miles, the NHC said.

As of noon ET Monday, Florence was moving at 13 mph, some 575 miles south-southeast of Bermuda the hurricane center said.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster warned residents to prepare for possible evacuations and he even called on President Donald Trump to declare a federal emergency in the state to prepare for the impact of the storm. The move will allow the state to use the National Guard for preparations and recovery if necessary.

The big difference with Florence is that we are in almost uncharted waters.

Forecasters have warned of a life-threatening storm surge, along with the damage of a hurricane's high winds. He encouraged people to learn evacuation routes and put fuel in their vehicles in case they're ordered to leave.

Florence is also expected to bring heavy rains, but the storm surge map does not take that flooding into account. Monday is the climatological peak date of hurricane season, the height of the eight-week period when the most powerful storms usually form, CNN meteorologist Pedram Javaheri said.

Florence will hit the mid-Atlantic states later in the week.

Hurricane Florence is forecast to make landfall later this week as a Category 3 storm with 115 miles per hour winds near Wilmington, North Carolina.

Public schools and state agencies in 26 counties will also be closed Tuesday until further notice, authorities said.

"Isaac is a small hurricane and uncertainty in the forecast is higher than normal, NHC Forecaster John Cangialosi said in Monday's forecast discussion". It has strengthened to a Category 4 a day earlier than predicted.

A mandatory evacuation order has been issued for residents living along the entire SC coast.

Inland residents should be prepared with enough supplies such as water, batteries, flashlights, and non-perishable food in the event power outages last for up to a week.

The US Navy said it was preparing to send about 30 ships stationed in Virginia out to sea.

All of Hatteras Island was under mandatory evacuation order and other parts of the Outer Banks will have to evacuate by 7 a.m. EDT (1100 GMT) on Tuesday, Dare County Emergency Management said in a statement.
