Bezos promises Amazon HQ2 decision will be announced by year's end

Mr Bezos said Mr Trump and other public figures should expect public and media scrutiny, which he called "healthy".

Bezos, speaking at the Washington Economic Club Thursday night, said it's a "mistake" for any elected official to attack the press.

What Trump "should say [of criticism] is, 'This is right, this is good".

"Well I do defend the Post", Bezos said.

And taking a look at social media, it's not Bezos alone. "It's unsafe to call the media lowlifes".

The Bezos Day One Fund will focus on two initiatives, the billionaire announced in an online post Thursday.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) last week introduced the Stop Bad Employers by Zeroing Out Subsidies (BEZOS) Act, which would require Amazon to pay a 100 percent tax on the federal benefits collected by their lower-income employees. After discussing the success of the Washington Post, which Bezos bought in 2013, Rubinstein asked how Bezos responds to criticism - some of which comes from Trump's Twitter feed - of Amazon and the Post.

Donald Trump's visit to Ireland in November cancelled
President Donald Trump walks to Marine One while departing the White House in Washington, U.S., September 6, 2018. Politicians and activists in Ireland had indicated they would hold protests during Mr Trump's visit.

But the attacks on the press - while unsafe - aren't stronger than USA institutions, Bezos said.

One part of the effort, dubbed the "Day 1 Families Fund," will give money to non-profit organizations that are "doing compassionate, needle-moving work to provide shelter and hunger support to address the immediate needs of young families", Bezos's message stated.

So, Jeff, from one member of the human species to another, I implore you to not only engage in philanthropy but also try to understand how you can fix Amazon's problems to set a better example. There will also be full scholarships for Montessori-inspired preschools in "underserved" communities, he said.

"We live in an age in which the winners have done incredibly well and perhaps the majority of working Americans haven't", said Anand Giridharadas, author of "Winners Take All: The Elite Charade of Changing the World".

"The customer is going to be the child", Bezos said. Most important among those will be genuine, intense customer obsession. "We're going to push through this".

With a personal fortune of US$163.8 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, the Amazon chief executive officer had been largely invisible in the world of philanthropy. "I know what Amazon could do when we were 10 people and I know what we could do when we were 1,000 and I know what we could do when we were 10,000, and I know what we could do the day when we are a half a million", he added.
