Trump Rejects Puerto Rico Hurricane Death Toll Report

US President Donald Trump has rejected the widely accepted death toll in Puerto Rico from Hurricane Maria and claimed without citing evidence that "3000 people did not die". That figure was then compared to the number of deaths reported from September 2017, when the hurricane hit, to February 2018, when the island still struggled with blackouts and a shortages of essential supplies on the road to recovery.

President Donald Trump's earlier remarks challenging one report's estimate on Puerto Rico deaths from Hurricane Maria were taken to task by the Late Show's Stephen Colbert and the Daily Show's Trevor Noah.

Almost 3,000 people died in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.

It was that number on which Puerto Rican authorities based their official tally.

"I disagree with @POTUS- an independent study said thousands were lost and Gov. Rosselló agreed". "This study, commissioned by the Government of Puerto Rico, was carried out with complete independence and freedom from any kind of interference". "That is just what happened".

Infrastructure failures and political confusion appear to have contributed to deaths even months after the storm hit, as GW's study found a lasting spike in mortality rates, especially in poor areas that proved harder to reach in the aftermath of the storm.

Hurricane Helene turns northwestward, not a threat to land
Watches in effect Tuesday forecast a storm surge of up to 12 feet at high tide from Cape Fear to Cape Lookout in North Carolina. Isaac became a tropical storm again approaching the Caribbean, while Hurricane Helene was veering northward, no threat to land.

We should note the response to Hurricane Maria was made especially challenging by these one-off factors: It was the third major hurricane of the season, it struck outside the continental USA, and Puerto Rico's electric grid and financial situation was already in disarray. That left him with enough phone time to insult Jamie Dimon, the J.P. Morgan Chase CEO who said he could beat Trump in 2020 because he's "smarter than he is".

Mr Trump's tweets came as Hurricane Florence approaches the Carolina coast and is expected to cause risky flooding and tornadoes.

"The job that FEMA and law enforcement and everybody did, working along with the governor in Puerto Rico, I think was tremendous".

Katie Pavlich said there can be valid questions about how death tolls are determined and whether the federal or local government is more responsible, but that's an argument for another time. Let's do better. But I don't think it helps to just point fingers at the president or the mayor.

DeSantis' statement did not mention Trump by name, but his campaign's decision to come out against the President's view was particularly noteworthy given the candidate openly courted Trump during his primary campaign and has commended him countless times.

San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz tweeted to the president on Thursday: "Shame on you", including a picture of his tweet. Rossello says, "It's not a time to fight, to have political noise, to use these things for the benefit of one party or another". The George Washington University report said the actual number of excess deaths was estimated to be in the range of 2,658 to 3,290.
