Hurricane Florence weakens to Category 2, still thought risky

Almost one year after Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico, killing more than 1,400 Americans and leaving the island largely powerless for months, President Donald Trump issued a message on Hurricane Florence: "We're ready".

Florence had been a Category 3 hurricane with 120 miles per hour winds on Thursday but dropped to Category 1 before coming ashore.

In the 5 a.m. ET advisory, Florence was 205 miles east-southeast of Wilmington, NC, packing maximum-sustained winds of 110 mph and moving to the northwest at 15 mph.

Hurricane Florence crashed into the Carolinas on Friday, knocking down trees and swamping streets with torrential rains and a powerful storm surge, before slowing to a pace that meant it would plague the area with days of flooding.

Time is running short to get out of the way of Hurricane Florence, a monster of a storm that has a region of more than 10 million people in its potentially devastating sights.

"Don't play games with it. We are ready. We're as ready as anybody's ever been".

Eudy said his family stayed in their home partly to protect their house.

Southeastern coastal North Carolina into far northeastern SC could see 20 to 30 inches of rainfall; some isolated areas could see 40 inches.

But the NHC warned that Florence still poses a deadly threat to a wide stretch of the U.S. Eastern Seaboard, from southern Georgia into southern Virginia, and remained capable of unleashing rain-fuelled catastrophic flooding of rivers and low-lying areas.

"Do you want to get hit with a train or do you want to get hit with a cement truck?" said Jeff Byard, an administrator with the Federal Emergency Management Agency. "The power will go off. Infrastructure will be damaged".

Hurricane Helene turns northwestward, not a threat to land
Watches in effect Tuesday forecast a storm surge of up to 12 feet at high tide from Cape Fear to Cape Lookout in North Carolina. Isaac became a tropical storm again approaching the Caribbean, while Hurricane Helene was veering northward, no threat to land.

A primary power supplier in the Carolinas, Duke Energy is already warning that some 75 percent of its 4 million customers could lose power - and not just for a few hours. Some weakening could occur as Florence moves across cooler waters and draws upwelling on the shallow continental shelf, but that will not lessen the storm's danger, NHC forecasters said.

The governors of the Carolinas, Virginia, Maryland and Georgia all declared states of emergency.

If the European model is true or the overall trend persists, University of Miami hurricane researcher Brian McNoldy said it "is exceptionally bad news, as it smears a landfall out over hundreds of miles of coastline, most notably the storm surge. he rainfall has been and continues to be a very substantial threat over the entire area".

Governor of southeastern US state Georgia, Nathan Deal, also declared on Wednesday a state of emergency for the state's all 159 counties after the National Hurricane Center said the storm will turn southwards after reaching North Carolina late Thursday and early Friday. The National Hurricane Center is calling for 20 to 30 inches of rain in North Carolina, with spots up to 40 inches.

In Wilmington, Solange Iliou Thompson closed down her restaurant, Indochine, because all of her employees had left the city. Protection of life is the absolute highest priority and that's what we are doing.

In a trailer park outside Wilmington, Alondra Espinoza was preparing to leave with her two young children.

Helping with rescues there were members of the so-called Cajun Navy, a group of Louisiana-based volunteers who became famous during last year's Hurricane Harvey, locals said on Twitter.

Two other tropical storms - Isaac and Olivia - have also been in the vicinity this week, with the National Weather Service estimating that some 10.15 million people lived in areas under either hurricane or tropical storm warnings.

In Virginia, 245,000 coastal residents were ordered to evacuate.
