Mother and Infant Among First Reported Fatalities as Hurricane Florence Makes Landfall

Two people died in Wilmington after a tree fell on their house, the city's police department said.

Firefighters and rescue crews pray in front of a home after removing a resident trapped inside during Hurricane Florence in Wilmington, North Carolina on September 14, 2018.

There have been two fatalities in Kinston as a result of Hurricane Florence, according to Lenoir County Emergency Services Director Roger Dail.

Satellites also continue to monitor Hurricane Florence as it passes over North Carolina to help meteorologists make more accurate predictions of how the storm will impact people living in the region.

Some towns have received more than 2 feet (60 centimeters) of rain from Florence, and forecasters warned that drenching rains totaling up to 3½ feet (1 meter) of water could trigger epic flooding well inland through early next week.

The father was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for treatment.

The fifth death, indirectly linked to the storm, occurred in Pender County's Hampstead community, Pender County Emergency Management Director Tom Collins told WWAY. "Once the storm moves further inland to Atlanta and Charlotte, the biggest issue will be rain and thunderstorms", she said.

About 10 million people could be affected by the storm and more than 1 million were ordered to evacuate the coasts of the Carolinas and Virginia.

In New Bern, the unsafe conditions prompted officials in the coastal city to place the city under 24-hour curfew at 7 a.m. Friday.

Nearly 20,000 people had taken refuge in 157 emergency shelters, Mr Cooper said.

"Rivers are rising to risky levels, and the relentless rains will continue through the weekend", North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper warned on Friday. Meanwhile, Florence crept across the border into SC overnight, with tropical storm force winds still extending 175 miles from the center.

Weather.com says of the expected storm surges: "A destructive storm surge will accompany the eye coming ashore sometime from Thursday night into Friday or Saturday, and coastal flooding may persist through multiple high tide cycles into this weekend east of the center of Florence".

Several roads in Lexington County were closed because of downed trees and utility lines, the county reported.

Still, he said: "I feel like the dumbest human being who ever walked the face of the earth".

It was expected to begin pushing its way westward across SC later in the day, in a watery siege that could go on all weekend.

Most of those cancellations are tied to the approaching hurricane, now a Category 2 storm with winds expected onshore late Thursday at more than 80 miles per hour. U.S. media later said a second man in Lenoir County died after heavy winds knocked him down as he tried to check on his dogs. The flooding began on barrier islands in North Carolina and then spread into coastal and river communities there and in SC, swamping the white sands and golf courses in North Myrtle Beach.

Florence was moving west-southwest at about 5 miles per hour (7 km/h), with its center located over eastern SC.

"Hurricane Florence is powerful, slow and relentless", North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said.

"WE ARE COMING TO GET YOU", the city of New Bern tweeted around 2:30 a.m. Officials in New Bern Friday morning reported storm surge as high as 10 feet.
