'Be ultra cautious': new strawberry alert issued after suspected copycat incident

The Warmuran farm which supplied the berries under the brand names Berry Obsession and Berry Licious, was inspected by Queensland police and Australian Border Force officers on Thursday.

Police began looking into the potentially unsafe berries after a Facebook user on Saturday wrote that their friend took a bite of a strawberry and ate "half a sewing needle", according to the Palm Beach Post.

"I found a needle, bit into it by accident and it snapped in half - or what felt like it snapped in half - and my knee jerk reaction was to swallow", the man told 7 News.

Acting Chief Detective Superintendent Terry Lawrence said anyone who finds anything in their fruit should contact police, who will come and collect them as potential evidence.

"Any strawberries bought from 13 September are safe and any strawberries that you are certain are not the brands Berry Licious and Berry Obsession are safe", Dr Young said.

'If you are in doubt, just throw them out'.

Chantal Faugeras posted to Facebook images of strawberries she says she bought from a Coles supermarket on the NSW mid-north coast on Tuesday.

Dr Young said she was particularly anxious about those who may have frozen the strawberries for use later and may not still have the packaging.

"It wasn't five minutes later they rang back and said it was too late, he'd actually bitten into it", she told 9 News.

"We have withdrawn Berry Obsession and Berrylicious branded strawberries from sale while this incident is being investigated".

Hurricane Florence weakens to Category 2, still thought risky
Florence had been a Category 3 hurricane with 120 miles per hour winds on Thursday but dropped to Category 1 before coming ashore. In Wilmington , Solange Iliou Thompson closed down her restaurant, Indochine, because all of her employees had left the city.

TWO popular strawberry brands have been recalled from Woolworths stores across three states, including NSW, with a disgruntled former employee accused of deliberately inserting sewing needles into the fruit.

"I don't know, because the problem is there's so many people handling the fruit all the time, and packing, so I can not say where it happened", he told a Channel 9 reporter.

Police are also investigating a copycat saboteur after a Coles employee at a Gatton store, about 90 kilometres west of Brisbane, found a "small silver rod" on top of strawberries in a punnet.

Queensland Health issued advice applicable to all strawberries, saying the fruit is safe to purchase but until advised, consumers should cut them up before consumption.

Only weeks ago, some supermarkets dropped the price of strawberries as low as $1 per punnet to help suppliers move tonnes of excess produce.

Queensland Police Service investigations are continuing.

The growers association released a statement acknowledging the reports.

Then she instantly realised that she had sent strawberries from the same punnet to school in her older son's packed lunch.

Queensland Strawberry Growers Association industry development officer Jennifer Rowling claimed on Wednesday night that a "disgruntled ex-employee" could be responsible for the contamination.

However, on Friday, NSW Police added that the contamination might have affected four more brands: Love Berry, Donnybrook Berries, Delightful Strawberries and Oasis.
