More Than 1,000 Flights Cancelled, 50 Injured As Typhoon Trami Hits Japan

Typhoon Trami, rated category 2 by Tropical Storm Risk, with category 5 the highest, is the latest storm to threaten Japan in a year of weather-related woes, including punishing heat, heavy rains and landslides.

Dozens of people in Okinawa and Kagoshima prefecture had been injured and thousands of homes were without power, NHK reported, adding that there were concerns that wind intensities could cause storm surges, landslides and flooding.

Some 700 people were evacuated to shelters in Okinawa and electricity was cut to almost 200,000 homes, public broadcaster NHK said.

Japan issued evacuation orders and warnings to about 700,000 households in southern and western Japan.

After dumping torrential rain on the outlying islands, the typhoon is forecast to pick up speed and approach western Japan on Sunday, remaining very strong as it barrels over the mainland.

Shinkansen service between Tokyo, Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima stations will be halted Sunday afternoon as the typhoon is expected to affect the areas, bullet train operators said.

Japan has been hit by a series of typhoons this year, including Typhoon Prapiroon, which brought downpours and caused floods and mudslides in western Japan.

The storm destroyed power lines on the southern islands of Okinawa on Saturday.

The storm's huge eye was forecast to move near the city of Osaka before churning across the Japanese archipelago, likely hitting areas still recovering from extreme weather that has battered Japan in recent months. Several houses were flooded or damaged and 38 people sustained minor injuries but no one was feared dead, local officials said.

Television footage showed branches ripped from trees by strong winds blocking a main street in the regional capital Naha, as well as torrential horizontal rain and massive waves splashing over breakwaters on a remote island in the area.

East Japan Railway announced that it would gradually suspend train services in and around Tokyo and end all trains around 8pm, shortly before the typhoon was to draw near the Japanese capital.

As of 4 p.m. on September 30, the typhoon was situated about 50 kilometers east of Cape Ashizuri in the western Japan prefecture of Kochi, and was moving northeast at 45 kilometers per hour. The airport only fully reopened on September 21.

Maintaining its "very strong force", the storm churned near Kagoshima on the western tip of Japan, causing seven minor injuries.
