Chinese state councilor meets USA state secretary, calling for win-win cooperation

At the same time, the United States and China are co-operating on efforts to pressure North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to give up his country's nuclear weapons and long-range missile programs.

Mr Pompeo said he wanted "a fully coordinated, unified view of how to proceed, which will be what is needed if we are going to be successful in denuclearising North Korea".

The South Koreans said the USA and North Korea discussed establishing formal negotiating groups to set a "denuclearization process" and work out a time and location for a follow-up meeting to the first Trump-Kim summit in June.

The two officials also discussed the possibility of the USA monitoring Pyongyang's steps towards denuclearisation, the South Korean President's office said on Sunday.

Pompeo said he and Kim had gotten "pretty close" to fixing the logistics for the summit but stressed that "sometimes that last inch is hard to close". She also said she believed the two countries "wouldn't be here without Trump".

During the historic Singapore summit with U.S. president Donald Trump, it was hard to spot Kim behind the wall of the men in black.

In Seoul, Pompeo said Kim is expected soon to name Deputy Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui as a counterpart for his new special envoy for North Korea, former Ford executive Stephen Biegun, who accompanied him on the trip.

"We urge the U.S.to stop such misguided activities".

Such an approach to security is not something new for North Korea.

Mr Pompeo told reporters in Pyongyang the two "had a great, great visit" and that Mr Trump sent his regards.

Once regarded as close to the Saudi establishment, he was a frequent defender of the kingdom's policies. Another official confirmed the story.

North Korea so far has suspended nuclear and missile tests, freed three American prisoners and dismantled parts of a missile engine facility and tunnel entrances at a nuclear test site.

Pompeo replied: "So we had a great, great visit this morning".

Kim Song Hye, who had accompanied top North Korean official Kim Yong Chol on his June White House visit, described Trump as "generous" and "a leader" during staff-level discussions in Pyongyang.

"I've never been involved in an worldwide discussion where there weren't differences of view, not only between governments but inside of governments", he said.

"I know that during your visit, you also want to exchange views with the Chinese side on regional hotspot issues including the situation in the Korean Peninsula", Wang said, adding that this demonstrates as two major powers and permanent members of the UN Security Council, China and the United States should strengthen communication and cooperation, so as to live up to the responsibilities entrusted by the global community.

The two countries have, however, been in a standoff over what the term denuclearisation means.

That's a shift in tone from North Korean headlines after previous talks, where they accused Pompeo of making "gangster-like" demands.

State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said in a statement that "Chairman Kim invited inspectors to visit the Punggye Ri nuclear test site to confirm that it has been irreversibly dismantled".

Moon also said there was a possibility of Kim holding a summit with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
