Turks claim Pompeo has heard recording of Khashoggi 'torture'

Riyadh strongly denies the claim.

However, a high-level Turkish official told the Associated Press on Tuesday that "certain evidence" of Khashoggi's murder was found in the consulate.

Mr Pompeo said the Saudis should be given a few more days to finish and make public a credible investigation before the U.S. decides "how or if" to respond. I mean, it's bad, bad stuff.

The president of the United States, who has long referred to journalists as enemies of the people, celebrated an act of violence against a reporter on US soil - to cheers and laughter from his supporters.

Turkish officials say Khashoggi was murdered in the Saudi consulate and on Thursday they reportedly expanded their search for his body to a large forest just outside Istanbul.

The pro-government Turkish newspaper Yeni Safak on Wednesday reported that an audio recording of Khashoggi's slaying suggests a Saudi team accosted him after he entered the consulate, cutting off his fingers and later decapitating him.

Turkish sources have told Reuters the authorities have an audio recording indicating Khashoggi, a us resident who wrote columns for the Washington Post, was killed.

Khashoggi, 60, who has not been seen since entering Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul earlier this month, is feared to have been killed inside the mission.

The White House so far has chosen not to accept either Turkey's or Saudi Arabia's claims.

'Trump's getting some criticism for his bold soft-on-murder stance, ' Colbert said on Thursday in his monologue for the CBS Late Show, referring to the president's statement on Khashoggi.

The president also said consequences would have to be "very severe" if it turns out Saudi Arabia is responsible for Khashoggi's death. "That's the message I transmitted to Saudi Arabia's foreign affairs minister", Freeland said in reference to the Khashoggi case. He said, "Each of those meetings, I stressed the importance of them conducting a complete investigation of the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi, and they made a commitment, they said they would do that".

Fred Hiatt, Editorial page editor with The Washington Post, says the newsroom made a hard decision to move forward with the publication of what could be Jamal Khashoggi's final column, after the journalist went missing inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

Authorities widened the geographic focus of the search after tracking the routes and stops of cars that left the Saudi consulate and the consul's residence on October 2, the day Khashoggi was last seen, the senior officials said. United States lawmakers from both parties have expressed outrage over Khashoggi's disappearance and reports of his murder and have been calling for consequences, including possible sanctions against Saudi Arabia.

New reporting overnight could escalate a diplomatic crisis between the United States and Saudi Arabia. They left the consulate early October 18 after searching the building and consular vehicles, a Reuters witness said.
