Adenovirus: 9th Child Dead In North Jersey

A ninth child has died in an adenovirus outbreak at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in New Jersey, according to the state's health department.

As of the announcement, the total number of confirmed adenovirus cases at the facility is at 23, with seven deaths confirmed to be linked to the outbreak. It is awaiting laboratory confirmation of adenoviruses in a child who died Friday.

A staff member who had fallen ill has since recovered from this strain of adenovirus, but the medically fragile children are the ones most vulnerable to the virus.

The death on Sunday at Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Haskell, New Jersey, was reported over the weekend by the New Jersey Department of Health.

"This is a tragic situation, and our thoughts are with the families who are grieving right now", Health Commissioner Dr. Shereef Elnahal said in a statement.

"The Department continues to work very closely with the facility to ensure that all infection control measures are being followed", the Wanaque facility said in a statement Wednesday.

It usually affects the respiratory system, but it can also cause gastroenteritis and conjunctivitis.

On Friday, an eighth child was confirmed dead following the viral outbreak, but officials say they do not now have laboratory confirmation of adenovirus in this child that's killed other pediatric patients at the facility. The health department was first notified of the outbreak on October 9, according to a statement from the agency. During a site visit last week, inspectors identified "hand-washing deficiencies", and state health officials have barred the center from admitting new patients until the outbreak is past.

Adenovirus is a respiratory virus that can cause mild or serious illness, though serious illness is less common. "The strain has been particularly associated with disease in communal living arrangements and can be more severe", according to the health department.

"They cause principally a whole bunch of minor troublesome infections spread by children, often from children to adults", he said.

Both the staff at the facility as well as state authorities are continuous in the efforts to contain the spread of the virus. The CDC is also investigating the outbreak.
