'Red Dead Redemption 2' Earns a Record-Setting $725M Opening Weekend

Rockstar Games is also claiming that Red Dead Redemption II is the biggest entertainment launch of 2018, but that's overall.

Now that all the numbers are in, Rockstar Games has revealed that Red Dead Redemption II had the biggest opening weekend in entertainment history - beating all other video games, movies, and music releases.

It appears that the High Dynamic Range (HDR) implementation in Red Dead Redemption 2 may not be not true HDR. The new game is set in 1899 and follows the dusty trail of mayhem left in the wake of the outlaw Arthur Morgan and the gang he rides with, which is lead by the charismatic killer Dutch Van der Linde. After the success of Grand Theft Auto Online, Rockstar is clearly all-in on the "Games as a Service" model, which is fine. Because "Grand Theft Auto V" launched on a Tuesday, it left the door open for "Red Dead Redemption 2's" - which launched on a Friday - record-setting weekend. However, I don't think anybody would have expected it see the single most impressive opening weekend in the history of entertainment.

Sony Interactive Entertainment said the horse opera was the most pre-ordered game ever on PlayStation Network.

Red Dead Redemption 2 was released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One just a few short days ago, on October 26.

The strong initial sales are good, but more importantly they seemingly create a wide base for Red Dead Online, the multiplayer portion of the game that is planned to launch (in beta) next month.
