Along the shore of Lake Michigan in both Chicago and in, the National Weather Service warned of flooding on Monday and said that waves could reach between 12 to 16 feet along the Cook County shore and 14 to 18 feet along the in shore.

The cancellations come on the heels of more than 1,000 cancellations nationwide on Sunday because of the blizzard conditions in the Windy City.

The National Weather Service issued blizzard and winter storm warnings Sunday for a large swath of the central Plains and Great Lakes region.

Further south, Gov. Jeff Colyer declared a state of emergency in Kansas on Sunday after 2 to 14 inches (5 to 36 centimeters) of snow fell in parts of the state.

Illinois State police and LaSalle County emergency management said crews were removing people from their cars by snowmobile and urged people to stay off the roads into Monday, WBBM-TV reported. Streets were dark, and many were without power, he said.

Most were supposed to be routed through Chicago or Kansas City - areas forecast to be hit hard by the storm. The National Weather Service was warning those conditions would make travel hard in places.

The storm was bringing winds from 48kph to 56kph, with gusts of up to 72kph to 80kph.

"Snow will continue to taper off to flurries and then end this morning", the service's Chicago office said in a statement, warning drivers to take extra caution on slippery roads in low visibility. Other schools throughout MI cancelled classes as the storm made its way toward the area.

The storm is moving to the lower Great Lakes, making its way toward New England by Tuesday. Wind gusts from 30 miles per hour to 45 miles per hour are possible as the system passes and temperatures drop through midweek.

For travelers flying out of Chicago's two main airports, the winter storm put their plans on hold.
