Hyde-Smith Hangs On For Senate Win In Spite Of Controversies

U.S. President Donald Trump had said at the Biloxi campaign rally on November 26 that illegal immigrants, such as those participating in the caravans between Mexico and the United States, are unfairly disadvantaging American workers.

MS voters on Tuesdayelectedcontroversial Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith to a full Senate term, putting an end to a tumultuous runoff election, the last federal election of the 2018 midterms. Hyde-Smith beat her Democratic challenger, former Congressmember Mike Espy, who's African-American, with 53.9 percent of the vote.

"Congratulations to Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith on your big WIN in the Great State of Mississippi". "We still do have a very divided state".

Hyde-Smith drew controversy toward the end of the campaign when she was caught joking about attending a public hanging.

"I want everybody to know, no matter who you voted for today, I'm going to always represent every Mississippian".

As Hyde-Smith attempted to push back against the political fallout from a disastrous stretch of her senate campaign, her polling advantage over Espy seemed to have dwindled along with her campaign funds. But based on Espy's experience this year, it is a good bet to say his supporters will "tone it down" on race and on Mississippi's controversial history on the issue in 2019. Hyde-Smith was heavily criticized after video footage emerged of her saying of a supporter in Tupelo, Mississippi, "if he invited me to a public hanging, I would be on the front row". Espy, who is black, called her comments "reprehensible".

He also said the man wearing the red shirt was the one who punched Kragthorpe. "I didn't go down, but I clutched over". LSU has stated that Kragthorpe was checked out following the incident and is fine.

The contest gained national attention after Hyde-Smith triggered an uproar with remarks that critics denounced as racist and which led some prominent donors like Walmart Inc. and Major League Baseball to ask for refunds.

In 2014, Hyde-Smith posted a picture on Facebook of herself wearing a replica of a Confederate army hat.

"It's a huge significance, because if you look at Republican women across the nation and in our state we're not having the same gains in electing women as our colleagues in the Democratic party are", said state Sen.

Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, an incumbent appointed to office in April to fill longtime Republican Sen.

It appears that Hyde-Smith neither consolidated the Republican vote completely, nor gave Republicans the kind of statewide special election turnout advantage they usually enjoy in the South.

Still, Espy often struggled to address accusations of ethical lapses. Hyde-Smith's camp painted Espy as a corrupt politician, highlighting his federal corruption indictments when he served as U.S. Secretary of Agriculture in the 1990s. He was acquitted on 30 corruption charges, but Republicans ran ads calling him "too corrupt for the Clintons". We will elect a woman and we will elect who's right for the job. "This looks like a mid-to-high single digit Hyde-Smith (R) win at the moment".
