Life is slowly settling down in Alaska after major quake

Back-to-back earthquakes rocked buildings and shattered roads in Anchorage, sending people running into the streets and briefly triggering a warning to residents in Kodiak to flee to higher ground for fear of a tsunami.

The quake sparked a tsunami warning for the Cook Inlet area and southern Kenai Peninsula, although the warning was cancelled soon afterwards.

A significant quake rocked Anchorage, Alaska at 8:29 a.m. local time today (Nov. 30).

Aftershocks Saturday continued to fray nerves, with people worrying about being caught in more massive shakers. People ran from their offices or took cover under desks.

Air traffic at Anchorage Airport was suspended for a few hours to assess the damage.

"Thankfully I pulled over when I did", he said. "Because a magnitude 7.0 in a city like that, you know, it could have been significantly worse".

A lawyer working and living in Anchorage, Hank Graper, said he was driving when the quake struck.

Fed Chair’s comments on slower hikes to boost EMs
The FOMC is likely to link future interest rate decisions more closely to incoming data and then decide on a case-by-case basis. In a speech Wednesday, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell raised similar points, which sent stock markets surging.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or deaths, but there appears to be plenty of damage, including at the newsroom of local CBS affiliate KTVA.

It requires buildings to be created to resist possible ground motion determined by location and natural disaster histories. And the 800-mile Alaska oil pipeline was shut down while crews were sent to inspect it for damage.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and United States Geological Survey (USGS) will continue to evaluate the situation and will issue additional watches and warnings if conditions change.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said President Donald Trump had been briefed about the quake and was monitoring damage reports. "Many roads ‎and bridges are closed".

Natural disaster damage also was preventing Alaska Railroad trains from making the trek between Anchorage and Fairbanks.

The 7.0 magnitude quake struck about 8 miles north of Anchorage, a city of 300,000 residents accounting for about 40 per cent of Alaska's population.

"If you can see through the walls, it's not good, evacuate, go to a neighbor's house, if your house seems to be leaning, it's not good, if you smell gas, go out, "said Anchorage fire chief Jodie Hettrick".

Alaska is shaken by hundreds of earthquakes each year, and many are hardly noticed. This quake wasn't almost as strong so any tsunami is unlikely to reach that level, but this is still a unsafe situation and should be monitored closely if you live anywhere across the Pacific.
