Urban Meyer stepping away from Ohio State should come as no surprise

According to the school, Meyer will coach the team through the Rose Bowl before handing over the coaching duties to Day, who takes over as the next Ohio State coach on January 2, 2019.

A news conference was scheduled for later Tuesday during which Meyer will formally announce his retirement and co-offensive coordinator Ryan Day would be named the program's 25th head coach.

Meyer brought an SEC style program to Ohio State and went 54-4 in the Big Ten in seven seasons.

Meyer missed the Buckeyes first three games against Oregon State, Rutgers and TCU as offensive coordinator Ryan Day took over the day-to-day coaching duties.

Meyer, who has generally received positive press, particularly from ESPN, for whom he worked for a year as an analyst, found himself the subject of a series of ugly headlines earlier this season over his handling of assistant coach Zach Smith, the grandson of Earle Bruce, a former Ohio State coach and a mentor of Meyer.

Meyer, 54, has won three national titles - two at Florida and one at Ohio State.

"He is still committed until we meet (with the OSU staff) and find out more about the situation", said Fred Battle, father of the OSU defensive back pledge.

Sooners in the playoff, will face Alabama in Orange Bowl
No. 2 Clemson is headed back to the Lone Star State for a second time this season and a first trip to the Cotton Bowl since 1940. Both bowls are scheduled for December 29, and the winners will play in the January 8 championship in Santa Clara, California.

His final game with the Buckeyes will come at the Rose Bowl, a game he has never coached before.

A report issued by an investigative committee left a lasting stain, detailing behavior by Meyer that could have taken down a coach of lesser stature. While Meyer had repeatedly stated his intentions to coach next season, he revealed to Cleveland.com in October his condition was serious.

"I believe I will not coach again, Meyer said". The Buckeyes went 3-0 under Day, including a win over TCU in Arlington, Texas, before Meyer returned to the sideline September 22 against Tulane. He's a second-year Ohio State assistant who had never before been a head coach.

Day was becoming a hot name in coaching circles and his ability to step in and guide the Buckeyes during Meyer's suspension demonstrated his ability as an up-and-coming coach. "He was directly responsible for my son coming to Ohio State". He's an Ohio State guy.

Miami - For the same reasons Meyer would make a lot of sense at Florida State because of the recruiting benefits and path to the playoff, Miami could be a ideal post-retirement home. It appeared to be a dream job for the Toledo native and success quickly followed.

Former Buckeyes linebacker Joshua Perry says in a tweet that aside from his parents, Meyer was "one of the most influential people to touch my life". He earned close to $6 million in 2017 before the school extended his contract and gave him a raise. Seven years was the longest he lasted at any of the four schools where he coached, following two seasons as Bowling Green, two at Utah and six at Florida.
