Huawei finance chief arrested in Canada as United States seeks extradition

Huawei has yet to issue a statement regarding Wanzhou's arrest.

Canadian authorities have arrested China-based Huawei Technologies' chief financial officer for possible violations of US trade sanctions related to sales of HP equipment to Iran a decade ago. A bail hearing is being planned for Friday to determine what will happen next.

Huawei's global chief financial officer has been arrested in Canada, where she is facing extradition to the United States, officials have confirmed.

"The ban was sought by Ms. Meng", continued the statement. "The company believes the Canadian and USA legal systems will ultimately reach a just conclusion". The U.S. previously banned ZTE, a Huawei competitor, for violating similar sanctions.

Reuters reported in April that us authorities were investigating what has grown to be one of the world's largest smartphone manufacturers for the "alleged shipping of usa -origin products to Iran and other countries in violation of usa export and sanctions laws".

Meng, 41, was tipped by some mainland China media as a leading contender to succeed her father, Huawei's founder Ren Zhengfei to take the helm of the telecom giant.

Officials for the US Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In 2017, ZTE pleaded guilty in US federal court to evading USA embargoes on Iran, by buying American tech parts, incorporating them into ZTE equipment, then illegally shipping them to Iran.

Wanzhou Meng has reportedly been arrested by Chinese authorities on suspicion of violating the US's trade sanctions on Iran.

The United States government is set to indict a top executive from Huawei, the Chinese smartphone maker, in a move that could increase tensions between the two countries.

"The Chinese side firmly opposes and strongly protests over such kind of actions which seriously harmed the human rights of the victim", the diplomatic mission said in a statement.

The arrest in Vancouver is related to violations of USA sanctions, a person familiar with the matter said.

At least 13 pages of a proposal to sell Hewlett-Packard computer equipment to Iran were marked "Huawei confidential".

Huawei, the world's biggest network equipment maker ahead of Ericsson and Nokia, has said Beijing has no influence over its operations. News of the probe broke in April 2018 when it was reported by the Wall Street Journal.

Huawei and the Chinese consulate general in Vancouver could not be reached for comment on Wednesday afternoon.
