The relaxed setting of the Hopman Cup is the flawless place for Williams to ease her way back into competition mode ahead of the Australian Open.

Her win levelled the tie between the USA and Greece at 1-1 after world No. 15 Stefanos Tsitsipas beat American Frances Tiafoe 6-3 6-7 (3-7) 6-3 in 135 minutes.

World No. 3 Roger Federer outplayed Briton Cameron Norrie 6-1, 6-1 to secure a winning start for defending champion Switzerland at the Hopman Cup Sunday.

6-2 over 23-year-old Maria Sakkari after one hour and 44 minutes, collecting 13 aces and forcing her Greek opponent to commit 10 double faults.

This was a great start, but we've got a long, long way to go here and in Melbourne. Maria is super young and such a good player.

Federer started the match nervously and dropped the first three points, but dug out of a hole with trademark clutch serving.

The Greek broke again in the third game of the second set thanks to a running forehand victor but the American found the way to break back at 2-3, staying in touch with his rival to set up an interesting ending of the set.

From 2-1 down in set number two, Serena won five games in a row to bring the match home in style, earning a break at 2-2 and another one in game seven with a forehand victor before closing the match with a good serve in the following game.

Two breaks of the serve in each set were enough for the 20-time Grand Slam victor to win 6-1, 6-1 in just 57 minutes, just over two weeks out from the year's first Grand Slam.

The 20-time Grand Slam singles champion broke immediately in the second set and looked sharp as he cruised to an easy first-up victory in the tournament as Switzerland went on to beat Britain 3-0.

Federer hasn't played the clay season since 2016, and hasn't made an appearance at the French Open since 2015.

World No. 2 Kerber beat Garbine Muguruza 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to snap a five-match losing streak against the two-time Grand Slam victor.

Swiss tennis icon Roger Federer says is looking forward to playing against United States star Serena Williams at the mixed doubles Hopman Cup, which kicks off on Saturday in Perth, Australia.

In her first tournament outing since the controversial loss to Naomi Osaka in the US Open final in September, Serena Williams struggled early and her groundstrokes were erratic in the first set.
