A large winter storm coming on the heels of Christmas is expected to bring snow to Nebraska, the Dakotas and Minnesota this week.

Six people havedied as a result of a severe storm system that caused blizzard conditions in the US Midwest and torrential rain and flood threats in the South.

As holiday travelers make their way back home Wednesday, a winter storm is descending on Minnesota, threatening to leave the western part of the state under a blanket of snow up to a foot deep.

The Minnesota State Patrol said it responded to 167 crashes, 259 spinouts and 13 jackknifed semis on Thursday due to the heavy, blowing snow that began late Wednesday.
