Baby girl found alive 35 hours after building collapse in Russian Federation

Five people were hospitalised with injuries from the collapse in the city about 1,400 kilometres southeast of Moscow, the emergency ministry said.

"The child was saved because she was wrapped up warm, and inside her cot".

Part of the 10-storey building collapsed following a gas explosion on Monday morning in the industrial city of Magnitogorsk, almost 1,700 kilometres (1,050 miles) east of Moscow in the Ural mountains.

The Soviet-era apartment block was home to about 1,100 people. The blast completely destroyed 35 flats while 10 more were damaged. Residents were evacuated to a nearby school.

The video filmed by the emergency services, which have been working continuously since the early morning of December 31, shows half a dozen men carefully pulling out a pink-skinned child from a pile of deformed concrete and steel, before another rescuer sprints with the baby to the nearest ambulance.

Frigid weather as cold as minus 26 degrees Celsius, plus the danger that the remaining part of the building might collapse, are major challenges being faced by the rescue teams, Dubrovsky said.

He added that efforts to stabilise the walls could take up to 24 hours, with emergency workers dismantling the building from the outside while hanging from cranes.

After an all-night search, officials said this morning they had found seven bodies, all of them adults, while another 37 people remained unaccounted for.

Emergencies Minister Yevgeny Zinichev said at a meeting with Mr Putin there were thought to be between 36 and 40 people under the rubble.

The blast reportedly happened at around 6am local time, when many people were sleeping on what is a Russian public holiday.

The girl is the first person who has been extracted alive apart from those residents who escaped immediately following the suspected gas blast.

The Emergency Situations Ministry said on its website that, in all, 48 apartments from the third to the 10th floor in the building's central part were damaged by the explosion.

"I woke up and felt myself falling", one witness told Russian television, according to news agency AFP.

Investigators blamed the collapse on an explosion triggered by a natural gas leak.

Such deadly gas explosions are relatively common in Russian Federation where much of the infrastructure dates back to the Soviet era and safety requirements are often ignored.
