Nationals Rumors: Nats still in on Bryce Harper after December meeting

If any Sox fans have been paying attention this offseason, it appears that many writers that cover Major League Baseball aren't fond of the idea of either Harper or Machado playing on the south side.

The Chicago White Sox have gotten down to business and presented Machado with a formal proposal, according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale.

There is a certain amount of burnout taking place among Philadelphia Phillies fans as they continue to wait on decisions from free agents Manny Machado and Bryce Harper.

The report characterized the long-term offer as serious and likely closer to $200 million than $300 million. Remember that both of these guys were expected to get record-breaking deals when they started free agency, perhaps joining Giancarlo Stanton as baseball's only $300 million men or Mike Trout, Zack Greinke, David Price and Miguel Cabrera as guys making $30 million a year. The market seems like it's waiting for Machado and Harper to sign before the rest of the dominoes fall. This bit of information from Nightengale comes just two weeks after Machado attended meetings with the White Sox, Yankees, and Phillies in their respective cities.

Tony Gonzalez, Champ Bailey, Ed Reed Headline 2019 Pro Football HOF Finalists
Over his career, Reed had 64 interceptions for 1,590 return yards and seven touchdowns. Hopefully, we will get to see Zach Thomas in the Pro Football Hall of Fame before then.

What interests Bryce Harper more, winning or more years on a contract? The only winning team with a clear path to Harper is the Dodgers after they traded away Matt Kemp and Yasiel Puig.

"...it should not be taken as gospel that the Phillies have offered or will offer Harper 10-plus years". Per Bowden, the 10-year, $300MM offer was merely the first offer the Nationals made to their erstwhile superstar. That could make the Nationals favorites to bring him back for the long term, if indeed the financial offer is substantial enough.

With plenty of suitors, and maybe even some lurking in the shadows, here are the top five potential destinations midway through the offseason as Spring Training approaches next month.
