Schauffele shoots 61 to win at Kapalua

The young American cemented his status as one of golf's stars to watch during a course record-equalling 11-under-par 62 and, at 23 under, he earned a one-shot win from overnight leader Gary Woodland (68).

But Woodland regained control at the par-five 15th, where he rolled in a 64-foot eagle putt to stretch his lead to two, and he birdied the par-five 18th to finish with a 17-under par total of 202.

Woodland started the day with a three-shot lead but missed a 10-foot birdie putt on the 18th which would have forced a playoff. The 2017 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year opened with a bogey, but reeled off four birdies and an eagle to make the turn in 6-under 31.

Three holes later Schauffele's title chances were given another boost when his approach shot from 102 yards at the par-4 12th hole dropped for another eagle.

Schauffele was in the group ahead of him, and Woodland could see as the 25-year-old Californian went after the left flag on the tough 17th hole to just inside 10 feet for the first birdie of the final round.

"I don't think it will ever be easy because I still believe I was playing well enough to shoot 66 today", Woodland said about not being able to convert a 54-hole lead for the seventh time. It's tough as you want to go at the pin and you know there is that bail out right but that's a tough up-and-down.

Perennially ranked as one of the PGA Tour's best putters, Day uncharacteristically missed two putts inside two feet. Justin Thomas, who carded an impressive eight-under 65, finished in third on 18-under-par.

"When you're trying to play for a trophy, it's not easy to defend leads", four-time PGA Tour victor Leishman said of Woodland. But it wasn't until he reached his second shot at the par-5 ninth hole that he started to consider his title chances. "I didn't take too long of a look, but I just sort of got a quick feel of where I was", he said. I had killed the par 5s all week this week, which is what you've got to do out here. I got that phone call late last night. He got within two shots early, but didn't make a birdie after the fifth hole and closed with a 72 to tie for fourth with Dustin Johnson (67) and Marc Leishman (71).

"I wish I had a shot that comfortable, say, at the Tour Championship a year ago, something where you can just put it in play and get it on the fairway".

Woodland, 34 qualified for the event in capturing the Phoenix Open and his third PGA Tour success while the scholars of the pro game will recall the Kansas-born Woodland led the opening two rounds of last year's PGA Championship before eventually securing a share of 6th place.

"Until you're world No.1, you're chasing".
