But perhaps most importantly he had the support of the Episcopal Centre of the Congolese Catholic Church, which believes he was the rightful victor of the December 30 election.

Fayulu alleges that President Joseph Kabila engineered a backroom deal with the largely untested Tshisekedi to thwart anti-corruption efforts in a country with staggering mineral wealth.

The announcement of a victory by opposition presidential candidate Martin Fayulu (who the Catholic Church has indicated was the winner) is unlikely, but would pose high risks of looting by military elements and a coup attempt in Kinshasa.

On Tuesday, Nangaa told AFP his panel hoped to complete the count within "24 to 48 hours" and then set a time for announcing the results.

Many have seen this election as Congo's first chance at a democratic, peaceful transfer of power since independence in 1960.

In this context, it is important that any challenge to the provisional results, including claims of inconsistencies with the verdict of the ballot box, be pursued peacefully, through avenues provided by the existing national legal framework, and political dialogue among all stakeholders.

The few opinion polls that had been conducted in the vast country ahead of the election had Fayulu, a former oil executive backed by two political heavyweights, as clear favourite.

In the run-up to the results, Tshisekedi said Kabila had nothing to fear should he come to power.

The influential Catholic Church notably said the result "does not correspond" with the data collected from polling stations and counting centres by its 40,000 election monitors, although it did not identify the person who it believes has won. The diplomats spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the press.

But on Thursday, 10 January, the Electoral Commission announced Mr. Shadary had polled only 4.4 million votes, a long way behind Tshisekedi and businessman Martin Fayulu.

Fayulu, a former Exxon manager and Kinshasa lawmaker, received 34 percent of the vote in the official results.

"How long are we going to negotiate results?"

But French Foreign Minister, Jean-Yves Le Drian, said Tshisekedi's victory contrasted with observations in the field.

President Joseph Kabila's preferred successor, Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary, came a distant third with 23.8 percent.

Many Congolese objected to Shadary, suspecting that Kabila would continue to rule from behind the scenes.

Britain's foreign secretary said he was "very concerned about discrepancies" in Congo's results, adding that the United Nations Security Council would discuss the matter on Friday.

DR Congo's powerful Catholic Church says election results tallied by its observers do not match official results announced on Thursday by the country's election commission, which named Felix Tshisekedi as the surprise victor.

DR Congo has finally delivered the result of its much-delayed presidential vote, but the risk of an explosion of violence in this notoriously unstable nation remains high, analysts say.

Many noted that Fayulu's campaign suffered significantly more harassment than Tshisekedi's, and that the latter's rhetoric towards erstwhile enemies underwent a dramatic change in recent days.

Spokeswoman Marie-France Idikayi tells The Associated Press that "we are waiting for the final deliberations of the electoral commission plenary session to end but the announcement room is prepared".

Defiantly, tens of thousands of voters in one of the barred communities held their own ballot on election day.

Congo's government cut internet service the day after the vote to prevent speculation on social media.
