Hmmm: Huawei exec arrested for espionage in Poland

Poland's Internal Security Agency has arrested a Chinese businessman and a Pole on suspicion of espionage, officials said on Friday.

The director of government company Safe City Malta (who is also head of the Malta Financial Services Authority) Joseph Cuschieri said discussions had to be held with the Data Protection Commissioner to explain plans for a Huawei-sponsored idea for a "safe city" linking up facial recognition CCTV cameras to identity databases.

Even without concrete evidence, many countries around the world are banning Huawei from working on their national 5G grid, with many more considering the same move.

The US and other Western countries have been wary of trusting Huawei, and have raised concerns the company's telecoms equipment could be used by the Chinese government for spying.

Geopolitical tensions over Huawei have intensified since Canada arrested a top executive last month at the request of U.S. authorities.

Huawei is a Chinese telecommunications company that is viewed by United States government officials as a national security risk.

Huawei issued a statement from its Chinese headquarters saying it was aware of the situation in Poland and was looking into it.

Unlike the case of CFO Meng Wanzhou - who is in Vancouver awaiting a hearing on her possible extradition to the US - Poland says it is not alleging the company of any wrongdoing and the investigation is limited to the individuals involved, including Huawei employee Wang Weijing.

Previous year the company also said it had signed memorandums of understanding for 5G equipment with 45 operators in Asia, Europe and North America.

People passing by a auto park sign of the Chinese tech giant Huawei in Warsaw, Poland, on Friday, Jan. 11, 2019. It said the man also went by the Polish first name of Stanislaw and had previously worked at the Chinese consulate in Gdansk. They'll both remain in custody for at least three months.

"On January 8, they were detained, the Internal Security Agency carried out procedural acts, and searches were carried out in many places related to their activities", deputy minister of the special services coordinator Maciej Wąsik told Polsat News.

The arrest might not have a big impact on broader trade tensions between China and the U.S., but it shows that "there will always be competition and acrimony related to Chinese tech companies", Benner said.

Norway's comments come at a time in the country is seeking to stamp out vulnerabilities in its telecoms networks. The company said it abides by applicable laws wherever it operates and expects employees to do the same.

Authorities also arrested a former Polish government official on similar charges.

That comes more than a month after Canada arrested chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou at the request of the United States while she changed planes in Vancouver on December 1. In New Zealand, the Government Communications Security Bureau turned down Spark's bid to use Huawei equipment on the new 5G network in November. US prosecutors have accused her of misleading banks about transactions linked to Iran, putting the banks at risk of violating USA sanctions.
