Trump discussed Russian Federation tower deal well into 2016, Giuliani says

The Moscow deal ultimately did not materialize but Giuliani's remarks suggest that Trump's discussions about the project with Cohen may have dragged on months longer than had been publicly known. "The building design you sent over is very interesting", the Russian real estate developer Andrey Rozov wrote to Cohen in September 2015, "and will be an architectural and luxury triumph".

Trump officials had initially described the project as the province of Cohen and simply in the discussion phase.

Donald Trump Jr. placed the blame for a Trump Tower Moscow project exclusively on President Trump's former attorney Michael Cohen in an interview on Fox News' "The Ingraham Angle" Monday night, saying, "We don't know anything about it". Giuliani on Monday insisted that he had never said Trump was involved in negotiations until the "day" he won the 2016 presidential election, as reported by the Times, and claimed the newspaper was "absolutely wrong". His statement Sunday, made on NBC's "Meet the Press", that Trump associates had continued negotiations about the real estate project deep into the 2016 campaign had again raised scrutiny into then-candidate Trump's posture toward Moscow, including his call in July of that year for Russian Federation to hack into Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's emails. "My comments did not represent the actual timing or circumstances of any such discussions".

A final letter of intent signed by Trump on October 28, 2015, noted Trump Tower Moscow would have "approximately 250 first class, luxury residential condominiums", 15 floors of 150 hotel rooms, a luxury spa by Ivanka Trump and fitness center, and a commercial area for businesses to rent.

He testified before Congress that the project he pursued on Trump's behalf was abandoned by the time of the Iowa Caucuses in January 2016; that would be consistent with Trump's 'political messaging'.

Cohen says he lied to minimize the public understanding of Trump's Russian Federation ties, to try to limit the various Russian Federation investigations and to be consistent with Trump's "political messaging". "Weren't a lot of them, but there were conversations", Giuliani said during the Sunday interview.

It was a tough three-day weekend for the president's pro-bono lawyer Rudy Giuliani. "What I was talking about was, if he had those conversations, they would not be criminal".

And Giuliani said Sunday of the project: 'The thing had petered out quite a bit.

Speaking with The New Yorker, the former mayor said he is "absolutely" anxious about his legacy amounting to lying for the president.

Giuliani argued on Monday, as he did a day prior to CNN, that Trump viewed the project as insignificant because it consisted at the time of only an unfunded letter of intent. A former federal prosecutor, he has also been the team's public face and, even if not the primary author of letters and other documents to the Mueller team, he has nonetheless helped develop strategy.
