China trade talks going well, will meet Xi in near future

After a few minutes, Lighthizer broke the silence with joking small talk about table positioning and appearing in photographs from the meeting between U.S.President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Argentina past year.

Trade talks with Chinese officials in Washington are going well, President Donald Trump said on Thursday as he prepared to meet a top official from China at the White House, Trend reports referring to Reuters.

The U.S. and Chinese officials met at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building located next to the White House, opening two days of high-level talks.

Writing on Twitter Thursday morning, Trump said meetings "are going well with good intent and spirit on both sides".

The talks come two-thirds of the way into a 90-day truce agreed upon by the countries' presidents on December 1 on the sideline of the G20 summit in Argentina.

Mr. Trump faces pressure to make a deal as both the partial government shutdown and tariffs already imposed are hurting US companies, many of which are opposed to tariffs.

"Let me just remind people, we do have another 30 days after this so my expectation is we'll make significant progress at these meetings, but I would just emphasize these are complicated issues", Mr Mnuchin said. "No final deal will be made until my friend President Xi, and I, meet in the near future to discuss and agree on some of the long standing and more hard points".

Trump said on Twitter he was looking for China to open its markets "not only to Financial Services, which they are now doing, but also to our Manufacturing, Farmers and other US businesses and industries".

Mr Rodrigues, 40, a building worker, told BFM TV he believed the police had targeted him deliberately while he was filming the demonstration.

The talks in Washington are expected to be tense, with little indication so far that Chinese officials are willing to address core USA demands to fully protect American intellectual property rights and end policies that Washington has said force US companies to transfer technology to Chinese firms.

President Donald Trump has said he favors a healthy Chinese economy, but not at the expense of American business and know-how. He has also threatened new tariffs on the remainder of Chinese goods shipped to the United States.

Washington also doesn't like that Beijing subsidizes its tech industry as part of its "Belt and Road" initiative to become the world's leader in critical sectors, such as artificial intelligence and robotics. Should the talks fail, USA import duties on $200 billion in Chinese imports are due to more than double on March 2 - something economists say could help knock the wind out of the global economy's sails.

The sides are expected to discuss protection of USA intellectual property, the forced transfer of United States technology through joint ventures, and enforcement mechanisms to verify that China follows through on any promised changes.

The Trump administration has imposed tariffs on $250 billion in Chinese imports, reported NPR. USA officials have denied any link between the trade talks and the Huawei case.

His profile contrasts with the usual resume of a top Chinese official: he is an economist who graduated from the prestigious U.S. university Harvard.

Trump heralded his steel tariffs on Monday as a'big win' for the United States as his trade war with China came under official review by governing organization for global trade.
