Theresa May risks Tory grassroots anger with Labour Brexit olive branch

That's raising questions about Mrs May's willingness to compromise with the opposition, after her letter to Jeremy Corbyn yesterday didn't rule out discussions on keeping Britain inside a customs union.

Some of her cabinet members also quashed the idea, with International Trade Secretary Liam Fox calling Mr Corbyn's proposal a "dangerous delusion".

Mr Johnson suggested he could back the Brexit deal if it included a time limit and unilateral exit mechanism from the Irish border backstop, but the former foreign secretary warned putting the changes in a codicil to the withdrawal agreement would not be good enough.

His remarks to reporters came after talks with EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier.

May will ask lawmakers on Thursday to reaffirm that they support her bid to renegotiate the backstop, a government source said.

Fox has previously said that he'd have "40 trade deals ready for one second after midnight" on March 29.

Last week, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn set out the conditions under which he would instruct his party to support an exit deal in parliament.

Mrs May sparked the furore by penning a letter to Mr Corbyn (pictured inset bottom) saying his call for the United Kingdom to stay in a customs union would hamper free trade deals - but stopped short of ruling it out.

Previous year the government said it wanted to replicate the EU's trade agreements "as far as possible".

Mrs Leadsom said: "I think she's making quite clear that what Corbyn is demanding is actually not as good as what the Prime Minister's deal is offering".

"I think that gives that sense of timetable, clarity and objective on what we are doing with the European Union - taking that work forward and our determination to get a deal - but equally knowing that role that Parliament very firmly has", he said on BBC's Andrew Marr Show.

She added: "The fundamental negotiating challenge here is the EU's position that completely frictionless trade is only possible if the United Kingdom stays in the single market".

That might mean that she's back before the end of this month with something concrete to vote on.

"That gives that sense of timetable, clarity, and goal on what we're doing with the European Union - taking that work forward and our determination to get a deal - but equally knowing that role that parliament very firmly has", Brokenshire told the BBC.

DIT says that with the agreement the British auto industry, which has consistently warned against a no-deal Brexit, could avoid up to £8m a year in tariff charges on their exports that would apply if the agreement had not been reached.

The British parliament is set to hold a debate on Brexit on February 14 but with just 45 days until Britain leaves the bloc, no date has yet been set for another "meaningful" vote on May's deal.

"(It) is to make sure that parliamentarians have had ample opportunity to look at the deal she's putting forward before it comes to that meaningful vote".

Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay is meeting European Union chief negotiator Michel Barnier on Monday and Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt will visit Paris and Warsaw for talks this week.
