Arrested Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou returns to B.C. court today

Guo said the USA government has failed to provide evidence on it being a security threat, and has convinced other countries to not use its products.

Chinese tech giant Huawei on Thursday said it is suing the United States over a law introduced past year that bans government agencies from buying its equipment.

"[You need to] realize that companies like Huawei and ZTE are wholly subsidiaries of the Chinese communist party and therefore we have significant concerns about the extent to which they are able to infiltrate our domestic industry here", said Republican Congressman from Wisconsin Mike Gallagher.

Huawei's Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou, Ren's daughter, faces potential extradition from Canada to the United States over charges of Iran sanctions violations.

As the trade talks drag on, with few outward signs of significant progress, a bipartisan group of Senators, including Texas Republican Senator John Cornyn, are calling for expanding the ban on Huawei equipment so it can not be used in US energy infrastructure. "It is an abuse of the US lawmaking process".

Huawei's rotating chairman Guo Ping has said that Huawei has not, and will not ever, implement backdoors in its products, and it will not allow other parties to do the same.

The ban is "based on numerous false, unproven and untested propositions", said Song Liuping, the company's chief legal officer, at the news conference.

Update 2 (9:31PM EST): Huawei brings up that USA companies have weak "cyber security hygine" as the data breaches that happened over the past few years such as Equifax were all unrelated to Huawei.

"There are issues arising out of the treatment of Ms. Meng upon her arrival at the Vancouver International Airport and her detention and subsequent arrest", lawyer Peck said on Wednesday.

The case strained Canada's relations with China, which this week accused two arrested Canadians of stealing state secrets and blocked Canadian canola imports.

China suspended a trade deal with Norway and restricted imports of Norwegian salmon after the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Chinese political prisoner Liu Xiaobo in 2010.

The US has also been lobbying allies to shun Huawei equipment on national security grounds.

China detained former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig and businessman Michael Spavor in what observers see as retaliation just days after Canada arrested Meng. Moreover, Huawei has an excellent security record and program.

China has warned of serious consequences if the Huawei executive is not released.

Washington has pressured other countries to limit use of its technology, warning they could be opening themselves up to surveillance and theft of information.

China arrested two Canadians on December 10 in what was widely seen as an attempt to pressure Canada.

The Chinese embassy statement has said that due to "obvious political interference", Canada should refuse the us extradition request and release Meng.

China suspended canola imports from a Canadian company "in accordance with laws and regulations and worldwide practice", foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang said at a daily news briefing.
