Daylight Saving Time: The myths and the truths

Quintana Roo, where Cancun is located, permanently moved its time zone ahead an hour three years ago to give its popular beach resorts more daylight.

Daylight Saving Time begins at 2:00 a.m. on the second Sunday in March and reverts to Standard Time on the first Sunday in November.

As you set your microwaves oven and auto clocks ahead one hour this weekend, the sun-worshiping senators of the Sunshine State are hoping Sunday morning is the last time Floridians must spring forward for daylight saving time.

That morning, most phones and computers will automatically jump an hour forward, and we'll lose an hour of sleep. The moves come in the wake of a vote in the Florida legislature previous year to adopt daylight saving time year-round.

Daylight Saving Time (DST) first became popular during World War I as a way to save energy, and America adopted the practice year-round during World War II.

The government expanded daylight saving time in 2007 in an effort to save energy. This past week, U.S. Sen.

Most of the US observes DST with the exception of Arizona, Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Daylight saving was repealed the following year. Before it, many countries ran on solar time, which relies on the position of the sun in the sky.

John Scott of Scotiabell has been resetting mechanical, tower clocks across the city since the fall of 2006 when he changed the time at Old City Hall.

While many people also cite the reason behind the time change as a way to help farmers with crops and harvesting, the truth is this was a myth created by the Chamber of Commerce to garner support for the concept.

Lawmakers in several states have filed legislation to do away with falling back.
